  • Question on veggies & bacon

    1. I eat mostly 3 types of veggies because they provide me with about 5 carbs per meal and also they are easily available. Cabbage, Brocolli & Bell Peppers. I am whining about getting bored with the variety. Any other people facing this issue?

    2. I eat bacon everyday. I also use the bacon fat on everything else. I am aware about nitrates but besides that I feel almost guilty eating all yummy that bacon fat. Even my veggies taste good cooked in bacon grease. Is there any danger to slurping up all that bacon fat at all so I can stop feeling guilty about it?

    Thank you for your feedback.

Why do you eat only those veggies then?

Is there any danger to slurping up all that bacon fat at all so I can stop feeling guilty about it?
On a very low carbohydrate diet, probably no. However, depending on what other foods you are eating, your menus might not be nutritionally sound.

    5 carbs per meal
    Are those net carbs?

Yes those are net carbs, and because those vegetables give me the most bang for the buck unlike salad veggies. I am trying to stay within 20 grams a day(induction) and get 12 to 15 grams of carbs for veggies(NANY)

Oh, I see... so you're following The New Atkins for a New You.

Well, even if you are trying to get 12-15 net carbs from Induction vegetables, you still don't need to eat only 3 of them. You can have more variety.

And there are other vegetables that are higher in net carbs... such as pumpkin, tomatoes, green beans, jicama...

This is dumb but I can easily count the carbs if I stick to three besides all three can go with each other too. Pumpkin I wouldn't know what to do, I have never eaten jicama before in my life. Just wondering if people here have such an issue. I am a guy so its simple to smother everything over bacon fat too! My protein intake is more varied, meat chicken fish and pork.

Then eat different vegetables. There's over 50 on the Induction food list.

Time to learn how to incorporate other foods in to your eating.

Sanj, do you want a solution to your problem, or do you just want to know if there are other people who are bored with their food because they don't take advantage of all the choices they have?

Re: Question on veggies & bacon

I want to know if there are others who get bored with selection of veggies. For me it is not advantageous to stock more than 3-4 kinds of veggies in large quantities. It also simplifies menu planning and carb counting . I try to get my 12-15 carbs per day that way following NANY. I realize the limitations of my current system. I was wondering if there were other people who run into such situations. Perhaps I can learn a different method if there is one out there.

Re: Question on veggies & bacon

There have certainly been times when I felt bored with what I ate. I take this is a danger signal. Because if I feel bored I may just do something that I will regret.
All the modern Atkins plans suggest that this may be a need to move to OWL and try out carbs from the food groups you have cut out. You do not want to go stir crazy here.

So when that has happened I have not been afraid to do new things. I have tried almost all the vegetables on the allowed list. Some I have come to like and others maybe not but I tried them. And I have found new ways to cook. Tried new variations of things. Found new spices. Again not all of them have been successful but I have had enough variation to keep me on the programme. I have been doing this over two years.
And one of the things that I am really happy with is that I have founds some new things to cook that I really like. I mean really, really like that have become favourites of mines.
I cannot think of anything else that would help you.
Have you tried avocado. I thought the new book was big on it.

Bacon and bacon fat is cool. I think the new book suggests mixing up your fats to get all the different kinds of fats.

You can also start eating nuts after your first 14 days. Gives you nice variety. Nuts are cool to add to salads. But many of us have issues when it comes to nuts. Keep the rules about portions that is outlined in your book

Thank you for sharing your experience Liv. I am a guy so I am not very imaginative in the kitchen but more important still. I have been on induction like for 4 weeks + Do you think I should still go to OWL even if I have not lost my threshold weight I would like to be at ? Is it okay to go on to induction even if you have more than 30 pounds to lose? It seems so sacrilegious to jump to OWL so soon.

Re: Question on veggies & bacon

guess you need a 50 ways to love your low carb cabbage recipe book.
have you looked at adding some cauliflower to your veggies cause there are lots of recipes using it for different things like pizza dough, noodles, potatoes that could give you a lot of feeling like you have more variety without actually having more and it comes in bags frozen so it is easy to store and prep.

since you like cabbage have you tried the low carb "crack" slaw recipe? or made it as the shoneys cabbage soup which if you leave the beans out is induction legal? I love cabbage and eat it a lot but I make it into a spicey slaw, that soup, crack slaw, cooked with a fatty pork roast, steamed with onions and polish sausage, stuffed with ground beef, as kraut in pork dishes and in something like a boiled dinner( meat onions cabbage with herbs for induction.

with 30 pounds to go you need to move to OWL soon cause you need to test the foods that will be part of your life long eating to see if you can handle them and if they cause you any cravings or weightloss issues.

Plus we have to lose the last 5-10 pounds in premaintenance so you really only have 20-25 pounds to go before you need to be done with OWL the great food experiment.

Since you are bored with just 3 veggies imagine how much happier you will be in OWL with more veggies, fesh dairy nuts seeds berries legumes other fruits root veggies and grains.

I have copied Linda's Low Carb recipes. I do eat Cauliflower on a rotational basis though I have never made faux pizza dough, noodles or potatoes. Those are "Things that must never be discussed" for me. Pork roast with onions and sausage and ground beef sounds dreamy..I do need to eat a lot of saur kraut but it does this thing with my breath in addition to ketosis breath. I could eat saur kraut all day though. Thank you for your suggestions.
