  • Too much protein - how do I get more fat?

I've lost about 70 pounds in 7 months but weight loss has been getting slower and slower. As I learn more about nutrition, I'm finding that the body converts protein to glucose when starved of carbs. I believe that is my dilemma. I was reading about the Fat Fast diet where 90% of calories come from carbs and while I'm not prepared to do that, I started yesterday on trying to increase my fat to 65% of overall calories, which Dr Atkins suggests.

My question is, what kind of foods will help me get more fat and less protein into the diet?

I'm already preparing to eat more of the following foods:

    chicken salad
    tuna salad
    deviled eggs
egg yolks (as in hard boiled) and no whites
    macadamia nuts
    sour cream
    cream cheese

What are some other choices that would help me reach my goal? I started doing this yesterday and already lost 2 lbs, whereas I had lost nothing the previous 9 days (and I hardly ever exceed 20 grams of carbs per day and drink water like a fish). So I think the added fat is working, but there needs to be more foods out there that are high in fat and low in carbs/protein. Anyone have some more food ideas??

    Do you use www.fitday.com
It is a great tool for finding out how much you are eating of what.

When I read your other thread my thought was that you were eating too much protein so that what you needed to do was to cut down some protein while adding more fat. More fat would help you keep fuller and relieve your need of protein. But that was me guessing a bit. Anyways keep that in mind.

I eat high fat food all days and I have no problem. My fat is usually butter and oil. I don't see those on your suggestion list. Because fat is so energy rich it takes little to make an impact. I do not have to eat eggyolk and cream cheese and loads of mayo to get there. It is very natural to get high fat just using some oil in cooking process. Making a bit of sauce to go with beef (I like mushroom cream sauce). Cooking my eggs in butter or bacon fat. Sauteing my veggies in olive oil or using and olive oil dressing.

If as Liv suggested, you can get yourself a free 'account' at www.fitday.com you can maybe log a few days of the menus that you have been eating so people can give some suggestions.

Once you have logged some menus you can make your account 'public' from the profile tab and will be given a link you can post here to allow others to see your entries.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I use a lot of butter, oil & heavy cream. I melt butter on my veggies, use cream in my (decaf) coffee, cook with olive/peanut/canola oil. I also use sour cream and mayo quite a bit. I also choose fattier cuts of meat, leave the skin on my chicken...
I've even started saving a bit of bacon fat & frying my eggs in it. I also limit my meat to 3-4oz per meal - so I have to look elsewhere for something satisfying (fat).

It's good that you won't do the Fat Fast ... since you've lost weight, you're not a candidate for it.

Net carbs? Why haven't you added carbs?

I would add more carbs if I were losing more weight. I eat a lot of steak and chicken and eggs, so my carb count has remained low. I hardly ever have any cravings and I never feel overly hungry. However, I'm trying to cut down on the amount of protein and increase my fat intake.

As others have suggested, I blew the dust off my Fit Day account and am starting to record my meals. I forgot how useful this site is for trying to determine your daily intake. I never skimp on butter or oil so this is not a problem. Limiting my meat intake to 3-4 oz instead of 12-14 will be the biggest change for me. Chicken or turkey I can mix with mayonnaise, but I have to find ways to deal with beef and add more fat into the mix while cutting down the amount of protein I ingest.

For a person your size 3-4 oz is probably not enough. I eat more than that and I am small. But keep an eye on how many grams of protein you do get and start thinking about where you can reduce. I think reducing protein is likely where you should look - rather than necessarily adding more fat. You will not lose if you over eat calories.

I'm sorry - I didn't mean to imply that you should cut your meat down to 3-4oz - that is what works for me (I also get protein from cheese/eggs, etc. in addition to the 3-4oz of meat). My husband will often eat double what I do for meat. If you usually eat 12-14 oz, try 10-12 or 8-10 oz and see how you do.

beef buy the fattier cuts of beef if you can afford them chuck instead of sirloin. You could also add fat to your beef by topping it at ther table with some of your cheese allotment or a nice butter herb sauce. Dr Atkins has a recipe in DANDR for a sourcream gravie that you make from pan drippings and your sourcream allotment.

Chick is easier leave the skin on the meat eat wings insead of boneless skinnless chicken breasts. Dark meat instead of white and you can always stuff your bonelessskinnless chicken with a vegies, herb and cream cheese stuffing or buffalo them if you like hot.

you can consume your protein in a cream based soup. if you are in OWl add more cheese as a fat and have cheese and protein unless it violates your religion.

and one can alwasy add butter or a flavored healthy oil as a dipping sauce to increase the fat while not increasing the protein
