  • Atkins bars & shakes??

Ok.....Me and my wife are both doing the Atkins WOE. And we are having lots of success at it. My wife saw these Atkins Bars that are safe for all phases (what it says on box), but has peanuts and 1g of sugar? How can that be? In the book where Dr. Atkins give an example of an "induction menu" he has a strawberry low carb shake? The ones in the same section where my wife found these bars, also have sugar in them. My wife is buying this crap and I refuse to eat or drink any of it. She keeps showing me the page in the book (and I seen it with my own eyes) where it says we can have the shakes. The book didn't say anything about these bars.....Can anyone explain? Please....thanks

    Re: Atkins bars & shakes??

At some point Atkins established a commercial company selling supplements and products. That company has now taken on a life of its own. It markets product and makes its profits on those product. And yes it markets some products for induction that clearly had illegal ingredients but it wants to make money. We recommend not having these on induction as we find that they stall many people.

The products do not have sugars. They have sugarr alchols and splenda in them. But they are very sweet and not very real food like. We call them franken foods

You can't go far wrong if you check the ingredients in any foods to determine which phase of Atkins they are 'legal' for.

As you surmised - with peanuts in them the bars are obviously not induction-friendly

You could make an induction-friendly shake using eggs and cream and some flavouring essence and one of your allowed up to 3 sweeteners if you wanted, but the commercial ones are probably not a good idea due to all the chemicals in them.

The book does say to look at the ingredients as well and to test each product
While any of these foods can make doing Atkins easier, don't overdo it. Remember, you must always follow the Rules of Induction.
      and
Be sure products that claim to be low in carbs really are. Also make sure they do not contain aspartame. What can you do to protect yourself? Read labels carefully (see "How to Read a Food Label" on pages 241-245). If a product seems too good to be true, it probably is. When you try a new food product, test how you react to it before eating a full portion. If you find it sparks new cravings or disagrees with you in any way, your safest option is to eat no more.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
