  • Tuna packed in oil?

I had an ah-ha moment today. From all my years of low-fat dieting, I automatically buy tuna packed in water, but I realized today, I can probably have tuna packed in oil. I looked in the book, it just said tuna. Please tell me I can have tuna packed in oil??

I was thinking about how when I was a little girl, I was sooo skinny and I ate bacon & eggs for breakfast, tuna packed in oil for lunch, pot roast, steak, chicken and lots and lots of vegetables in butter for dinner and my weight was always just where it was suppose to be. When I got married I weighed 110 pounds. But then, the diet craze hit me and I have been battleling my weight ever since. If I had continued to eat the way I was raised to eat, I never would have had a weight problem!

Of course you can have tuna packed in oil!

In fact, tuna packed in oil tastes soooooooo much better, imo. And you know how tuna in water is sort of stringy? Not tuna in oil!

I know how you feel about gaining weight while eating "healthy" (low fat). I gained alot of weight during college (the carby cafeteria food). So I became a low fat vegetarian to shed those pounds. Well, I gained about 40 pounds. So I switched to vegan, and gained some more. But it didn't bother me because I was eating "healthy"---little if any fat, plenty of grains, plenty of fruit and vegetables, plenty of legumes.... Well, to date, I've lost most of my vegetarian diet fat---and I'm eating a diet similar to what my skinny grandpa used to eat.

Well, at least WE learned something from this and at least it isn't too late for us.

okay.. I have to admit it. I have never thought about it. I have always just bought the tuna in water because it was "better for me". Now I am wondering if I should try the kind in oil.. does it really taste different?

Doesn't taste as fishy either, imo.

Julia Child on one of her shows compared the amount of fat in tuna in water and tuna in oil. The "huge" difference was 2 or 3 grams.

Anyhow, Atkins is a high fat diet, so tuna in oil is perfectly acceptable.

I remember the tuna salad my mom used to make, it was so good. I'm going to go to the store today. My dad is 85 years old, he has eaten tuna packed in oil his whole life and it never hurt him!
