Prior to atkins I have enjoyed weight workouts. However with this way of eating I don't feel that weight workouts would be beneficial at all. Feel free to correct me, but especially during induction or any part of atkins, if you do heavy weight workouts, wouldn't you be tearing down muscle faster than you can build it? Carbs along with protein are necessary to rebuilding muscle. Thats why any nutritionalist worth their weight in feathers recommends that you eat a carb-rich meal after workouts. So I'm asking if weight workouts are a good idea or not at this point.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

I have been lifting weights since 2 weeks after starting Atkins. I am building muscle extremely well going from 131 lbs of Lean Body mass in November and 51% bodyfat to 147 lbs of lean body mass and 36% body fat 2 weeks ago. I would say that is pretty substantial gains. The only problems I have had are medical that have arisen from an existing Thyroid condition which is being looked after now. I have been following Extended induction for almost 6 months CHEAT FREE and up till the last 6 weeks I have been having no problems with energy either.

I am looking forward to continuing body building now that my Anemia is being taken care of. I have a form of Vitamin deficiency of B12 which is caused by Autoimmune disease unrelated to Atkins. I belive I would have felt worse if I had not been following Atkins and actually my doctor said the same thing. Because my WOE is rich in Vitamin B12 sources it took a while for it to develop. SO I am greatful to Atkins again because it has really helped my energy levels.

Body building is not only good for the body it is excellent for burning fat and resculpting the body. It builds energy and an overall sence of satisfaction. I would not go back to the way I was and I love lifting so don't quit because of the worlds misconception of how to build this WOE is excellent for building muscle.

I lift weight, have been since I started Atkins. I'm working with a personal trainer because I have MS, he says 20 carbs along with protein is enough. It's working great for me, I am stronger all over.

actually those folk telling you you need carb rich diets to build muscles don't understand how the human body works. On your Atkins you have high enough protein intake at 30% to protect your muscles and the fat burning actually protects the muscles from canibalism by controlling the insulin production and generating lots more ATP then carb burning does so you don't turn to your actual muscle stissues for fuel. It ewill take you a while to build up your bodies supply of chemicals for transporting the fats, reacting the fats and generatign the ATP in your muscles but each time you workout your body is stztrign to build more and more of them. If you read Lyle McDonald the muscle guru you knoew you only need 40 grams not 40 net grams of carbs to spare muscles on the cutting plans and some protein degradation is needed in the body to activate the muscl building enzymes.

UConn did a study on healthy men who switched to Atkins vr a control USDA eating plan and the Atkins folk even without working out gained muscle mass in 6 wks time. Aktins will increase your lean muslce tissues period and working out will increase your metabolism and decrease your fat mass faster so follow the instructions Dr Atkins gave you in chapters 15 and 22 and do your mandatory exercsie both the aerobic and the resistance parts. I've been lifting 3 trimes a week for over 2 yrs now from induction levels to maintenance levels of carbs and never had a problem. I added according to the dunk tank measure 19 pounds of lean body mass in that time while losing 165 pounds of fat mass.

I lift weights, every second day. Upper body, not more than 20 lbs, legs about 70 lbs. I find this strengthens my loose excess skin, from the weight I have been losing. I don't believe in surgical methods, and this is alot more fun, and doesn't hurt!!!

I am addicted to weightlifting. I started lifting this year (2005) and I'm telling you, the inches are just melting off! I haven't lost a whole lot of pounds, but I am definitely shrinking and people have definitely been noticing. My entire body is just morphing! I lift pretty heavy for a woman and it has been working great for me. I am getting so strong that I helped my cousin move this weekend and I was helping the men with the furniture. None of the other women had the strength to do that! Just so you know, I am a very girly-girl! I have not been bulking up and look very feminine. Don't be afraid of weight lifting!

i weight train , remember , 2 pounds of muscle = 1lb of fat , but muscles also burn calories and fat faster , so dont give up on the weight training , stick to it

I have been weight training and eating Induction level carbs for about a year, and I have not seen any problems with muscle retention and building well in some parts. In short, from my experience I don't believe the theory.
