what is this vegetable called?

I eat a lot of this vegetable, it is in the dutch translation as a salad, but I can't seem to figure out what it is called in english, thanks for helping !

We call it "Belgium endive" here in the US. It's also called Witloof endive too.

Yep! Endive it is! Nice poached, and and then put under the grill to brown with ham (in layers), besciamelle and cheese... How could one substitute the besciamelle to be Atkins friendly, I wonder....? Maybe cream would be ok? Any ideas?
