  • Pain in the a** relatives!

So we had a Mother's Day party and of course, everyone noticed that DH & I have lost weight. Now, over the past year, I have asked many of my relatives how to lose this weight and they just shrugged their shoulders and said eat less, exercise. So I ate less and exercised and didn't lose any weight. Then, my brother-in-law lost 60 pounds on Atkins, showed us how to do it and we have been losing ever since. So my sister comes up to me at the party and tells me she joined Weight Watchers in January and she has lost 17 pounds. I told her that I started Atkins the last week of February and I've lost 21 pounds and saved my money! Then the whole family gets into a conversation about how bad Atkins is, that I'm gonna lose weight but I'll die from "eating all that meat and no vegetables" We tried to explain it to them, but their minds were closed. Why is it when you are struggling to lose weight, nobody will help you, but when you start seriously dropping the pounds, everybody suddenly wants to tell you about their diet and why it is better than yours??????

Oh, and I also wanted to tell you guys, I did Atkins at the party, no problem. There was a cake there that I would have loved to eat, but I didn't!

    ROTFLMAO!

Good for you! Here's my mother's day experience

I loved how my cousins were telling my sister and me how unhealthy Atkins was while they were cramming cake and cookies into their mouths.

    Anyhow...

That's a good question. I'm not sure why people do that. They also have a tendency to not be concerned about your health when you're almost the size of a minivan, but when you drop a few pounds, they start telling you how unhealthy your diet is and that it's going to kill you (and if they're my cousins, they say this while they shoving cake into their mouths.) :sarcasm

I have had a bit of a different experience than this. I have heard all the tales about how Atkins will kill you yadda yadda yadda. That is until I started losing the weight. Now people ask me how I am doing it and want to know more and want to hear about it and listen to me talk about the broken food pyramid and it's what made us fat to begin with. I had my person trainer friend go from telling me I am doing the worst possible thing for my body to telling me how impressed he is with me doing it and asking me how I feel and truly thinking about the fact that not only do I feel good but I feel great! As the weight comes off further you may see more of that type of reaction. I have been getting a lot of compliments about how good Ihave been looking recently. There is a party in August, rather a trip to Lake Powell that will be one weeklong party. The people on the trip have not seen me since before I started this WOE. I am hoping to have some significant losses between now and then and just bask in their approval :yes

Anyway good job for keeping strong through the party. Often times the friendly enemies can get to us, just keep being strong and their tune will change.

I agree, that was really funny!

Let the naysayers say, if they don't get it after you explained it to them, their loss, besides you are doing this for yourself, not for the understanding of other people.

              I just tell people.

"We will just have to agree to disagree, but I am a big girl now and will continue to live in the way that makes me happy."

Pretty much shuts them up, I mean, Really what can they say to that?

Today, I did Walk Away the Pounds, 2-mile with stretchy, 45 minutes of Water Aerobics and Hiked on a trail with my DH for 45 minutes. I guarentee you none of the people at that party that were chowing down on that cake had that much energy today!

I have told people "you didn't think twice about me when I was doing McDonalds three times a day and weighed 328" and now you think I am going to die because I eat grilled chicken salad, eggs and turkey sausage and brocoli.

PSS I have to admit I was skeptical and told people Atkins was unhealthy when I was doing a different plan. But once I read the book it changed my mind. Maybe we should keep a couple of extra books on hand and just pass them out and tell them to read the book and then we will talk.

                        "Unhealthy Atkins".....

I must say the same thing. After I had my baby, and reached all time high (weight), my older sister laughed and called me "big momma" (and only was 5-10 lbs smaller @ that time) any time I'd try a diet, she would be so jolie and make jokes or try to ruin my diet... Now she is begging me to give her any atkins info... And always complementing after seeing my great results in a small amount of time.

Yeah, don't you just love the family member who tell you "you won't stick with it, it's too restrictive and impossible to stay on" while you are just happily losing 1-3 pounds a week? This seems so easy compared to low fat eating where I was starving every day!

Oh can i so relate to the realtives being pissy. Both of my parents are diabetics so it drives me crazy. My mom is on pills and so is my dad whom are both overweight. THey are encouraging me but dont think about themselves. I sware if i could just get them to start also they would be so happy. Hence the reason I am doing this now. I dont want to end of diabetic also. I had gestational diabetes with my first child and we are wanting to try for another very soon. I want to be in the best shape of my life before we do get pregnant. Right now I weigh less then when i got pregnant with my daughter.
