I was diagnosed last month as having acid reflux and was put on Nexium to help. I started this diet back again yesterday and I was told to try and avoid high fat foods as they are hearder to digest. I have already kicked caffiene and also gave up any alcohol (I might have a rum and diet coke once a week). I was wondering if anyone could share advice or experience with this situation.

I am going to give it a try for about a week to see how it goes. I have a call into my doctor anyway. I know my reflux is from my weight and this is the onoy diet that really helped me lose. I have also started working out more so hopefully that will help. My reflux has not stopped so this can't be any worse.Restart 5/11/05

this probably doesn't apply to you but another problem was that I sat at a computer almost all day and I noticed I was slouching...and since I would eat at my desk like that it aggravated the reflux...I improved my posture...took frequent breaks and drink lots of water and have never had another occurance...and I was at the point where every night I was doubled over in agony.32yr old Female

I do sit at a computer most of the day Mon-Fri. I try to watch my posture anyway since I have mild scoliosis. I drink a cup of decaf coffee when I get to work, then drink only water for the rest of the day. I might have a glass of diet decaf cola in the afternoon about twice a week. It's mostly worse in the morning after I get up. I also get up and walk around several times during the day. I'll see how this week goes.Restart 5/11/05

Well I have refractory reflux disease that has led to Barrett's Esophogus. I've been on Atkins for almost 2 years now. I take Nexium and Zantac300 ( both prescription) daily. If I don't take my medication, I still have horrible reflux, but eating this way has not affected my condition one way or the other. I don't know of any reason why it would. A few of the things Dr's will tell you do to are things that Atkins himself recommended for instance giving up caffeine and alcohol. Also eating 6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones helps some people.

I had an upper GI done and he said everything looked ok, no Barrett's or anything. I have tried eating smaller meals so I do not overwork my stomach. My next appt is next month and he said he may step up my medication because the Nexium works to a point, but I still wake up with bad reflux some mornings.Restart 5/11/05

I take Prevacid twice a day for my acid reflux. Nexium didn't work for me. This sounds kinda stupid, but I don't know if the acid reflux went away from the prevacid, or from the diet. I guess I would have to stop taking the prevacid to find out. I used to get acid reflux from lifting weights, don't know why that would trigger it, but I had terrible chest pain after lifting weights, my trainer made me go to the doctor because he thougt it might be heart related, it was acid reflux!Chriss Female 246/236/160 5'3"

Since I have been cutting out caffeine, and also my weekly cocktails (twice a week rum and diet coke), it has helped. I also have quit eating about two hours before bed and that seems to have helped. Today is day three back on induction, and it does not seem to be any worse or better so I'm going to stick with it. I have been trying to eat less fried (legal) meals and bake more and that seems to have helped. Also the smaller meals have made a difference.
This is awful stuff, I went to the ER because it felt like I was having chest pains. Turns out what felt like a heart attack was just a severe case of reflux. This getting older is tough, in my twenties nothing phased me. The thirties have been a wake up call.
My doc said I can stick with the diet as long as I approach it carefully because the weight loss should make a drastic improvement in itself.
It's funny because this diet cuts out the main things that cause the reflux, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, ect. And people are harping this diet is bad, hello!! This diet helps cure a lot of physical problems while getting the weight loss down.Restart 5/11/05
