Isn't that something -- all the damage sugar does to us...and yet it is so hard to resist at times.

I've read that if sugar were discovered today, it would be regulated as a drug. It definitely feels that way when you're trying to avoid it!

It makes me feel like I'm on drugs. Early October, my husband and I went out for dinner for our anniversary. It was a buffet. I got myself a salad & poured on some seemingly harmless vinaigrette dressing. As soon as I tasted the dressing, I knew it had sugar in it - it was far too sweet. And sure enough, minutes later, the room was spinning, my head was feeling really loopy, and within 30 minutes, I was stuck to the toilet for the next 2 hours. It was *not fun*. At all.

I am not in maintenace andhave only jsut completed my 14 day induction, which I am staying on. But anyway today I went to donate plasma,as I do every week twice a week, well near the end of my donation almost passed out. Normally after you donate they pump 500mL of Saline in you and you can go. Well today because of almost passing out they made me drink a little box of juicy juice, even though i told them I am on Atkins and haven't had any for 15 days now. 21 grams of sugar after not having ANY for 15 days.

I got so sick and am stillnot feeling well 5 hours later, i get nauseous and very tired every time i try to walk, my head hurts and hasn't gone away with tylenol, overall i jsut feel so crappy I called off work. Definately not eating sugar if I don't have too ever ever again.... arrrggghhhh

Re: How do you react to sugar now?

I think part of the effect is because of the "good" bacteria that live in our gut. These little guys help you digest all sorts of foods, including sugar. When you cut sugar out of your diet, part of the good bacteria population dies off -- they don't have as much to live on. Add back those foods, and you don't have those helpers, so the sugars ferment in your gut, causing gas, bloating, etc.

This is probably at least part of the reason why Dr. Atkins insisted that carby foods be added back in SLOWLY -- part of adjusting is gradually building back those helpers in our gut.

Aside from the "bloat" of stored glycogen that comes screaming back, sugar doesn't bother me *at all*.

I wish it did. I really, really wish it did.

(giggle) Yes, if it bothered us more maybe it wouldn't be such a temptation, ay?

Re: How do you react to sugar now?

I have noticed already that when I have sugar, I react really badly to it. Like going to a bar, ordering a diet coke (since that agrees well with me) and just being given regular, first of all, it tastes NASTY, second of all, I start to feel really whoozy and dizzy.

I just cant handle any sugar anymore, which is ok because I no longer desire it.

For anyone one who gets an upset stomach first try not to do it but if this accidently happens to you yougurt with live cultures will put good bacteria back into the intestans. And then get right back on Atkins I do not know if the low carb yougurt has them but yoplait, and Dannon do.

Live yogurt is GREAT! Even if it isn't Atkins-friendly, it gives you good nutrients and friendly bacteria, especially when someone has an upset and consistently upset stomch.

Re: How do you react to sugar now?

I had a TINY piece of cake for my dad's retirement. It tasted fine but afterward I had a HUGE stomach ache. I think I've learned from my mistake! My mother keeps buying candy and pie. She keeps telling me "I don't see how you can't just have a taste." She has NO idea. She really drives me nuts some times. She is very overweight and has always bugged me about my weight. But now that I'm losing and doing well on Atkins she keeps trying to sabotosh me. Thank god I'm a strong person. I don't know what my mom wants but I'm doing this for ME! Wow, I got a bit off topic, sorry about the tirade.

fatal, my family is the same way. "One bite won't hurt..." Uh yeah, I'll be up all night puking, which is one of my least favorite things to do...
