  • question about maintenance

    Hi!

I'm not quite sure where to ask this so if it doesn't belong in this forum feel free to move it.

I have been on induction for the last 2.5 months and have been raving how fantastic Atkins is, to many of my friends. One friend in particular is interested in doing Atkins herself b/c she has heard of all the healthy benefits I have reaped since starting. However, she is not interested in weight loss and/or being in ketosis. Can a person start doing Atkins w/t starting in induction and OWl, and go straight to maintenance? Or, it is vital for them to go through induction to detoxify even though they are not interested in weight loss? Can one reap the full benefits of Atkins by starting in the maintenance phase? I hope I am not confusing you all with my question.

    TIA
    Starting weight: 168.5

Tell your friend to buy Atkins for Life. Or even just get it from the library and jot down some ideas and recipes. No, she would not need to do induction if she does not want to lose weight. The AFL book is chock full of great information and inspiration, and fantastic menus of Maintenance recipes. She will get lots of ideas about how to eat Low Carb and healthy without having to drastically cut carbs.

yep AFL is the book for her. She can do what Mrs Atkins calls backing into atkins by switching to healthy carbs and eliminating the unhealthy ones. She can if she was doing low fat add more healthy fats to her current diet and poof she is an Atkins WOEer. She will have to be in ketosis as defined by Dr Atkins because without the carbs she will be fat burning which is what he defines ketosis as. in his newer books he calls it benign ketosis and then liposis which is what it really is. Your frien while she sleeps or if she takes long walks or even jogs is in ketosis during that period of her high carb eatting as is the rest of the high carb population. They just don't know it.

Doing it that way it will take a bit longer to reap the health benefites as it will take longer for her body to make the final adjustment to the fat burning as the primary fuel system but she will get it. She will not get the craving and appetite control you got though because that is the result of deep ketosis and almost all Atkins OWLers loss it when they move to premaintnenace.

Now if she just switches her current diet to healthier carbs but keeps it high carb low fat the many Atkins health benefits like lowering of blood pressure, blood sugars, and cholesterol will still elude her.

      EDIT
