  • Absolutely failed to keep my diet on vacation

There is just NO comfortable way for me to eat low carbs while on the road with three kids in the car. Went from Chicago, through the Smoky Mountains to Myrtle Beach. Stayed at the Hilton for 4 nights at the beach and then went to Washington DC to visit my cousin. Then back to Chicago, and by time I was on the home stretch, I,was eating Steak-n-Shake, Taco Bell, and Mc Donalds.
    I failed
    Miserably, and feel sad now.

    Well ...

When you wake-up in the morning dont look back at what you ate last week. Focus on the week ahead.

I gained 5lbs on vacation last month and by the end of the first week back it was gone because I went straight back to the AWOL.

Now if you wake-up and head to McDonalds for breakfast thats another thing entirely!!! :yikes

You will be ok, confession is good for the soul.

same thing happend to me just a week back. I dont feel bad at all - i mean, you cant go back and undo it right? I gained 8lbs, but lost 6-7 of it in a couple of days.

just get back on that horse, and it will all be ok - i promise :hug

All are brutal things - but any damage can be overcome by recommiting yourself. Don't look back - look forward and take each step as it comes.

Thanks for the support everyone. I have recommitted myself to the diet as I rolled back into Chicago that evening while thinking about the breach in diet. I think that being home makes it very easy to get back into my routine.
            Thanks,

Kinda' off topic, but worth pointing out that this was water weight. Please don't think you went up and down 7 or so pounds of fat in a matter of DAYS! When you eat high carb after being in ketosis, your body refills your muscles glycogen stores. Every gram of glycogen brings with it 4 or 5 grams of water, and that's what gives you the quick gain and loss. That's why 120 carbs of sugar in a pint of ice-cream can make you gain 4 pounds. It's all the water that gets sucked up with it. It's not as bad as you think. One week vacation even if you ate the entire wrong thing is not going to un-do months of dieting. Just get back on the horse!

                  Trip to Japan

This is very interesting to me.. i will have the same problem in a few weeks. I am getting married in october and have been doign atkins for a while..liek 4- 5 months to prepare..fit into wedding dress and all. I am exactly where i wnat to be weight wise and just want to maintain this weight until right after the wedding. I still plan on being low carb but maybe not as strict. I have a few questions..that sort of go along with this thread.
first, i should not eat any high carb food until after the wedding...so as to not get bloated with water gain..correct?
second..im going to japan for the honeymoon and will want to eat some of my old favorites..udon, ramen, rice...
my dilema is, ive worked so hard on this and dont want to blow it..and want to continue this way of eating healthy low carb options when i return. is this going to be possible and still enjoy my honeymoon? its not like i get to go to japan every day! please advise on what you would do.. thanks!

                  :confused

mako, i think thats a decision you have to make yourself. if you know what will happen if you eat ramen, rice, udon and you know you wont freak out if you gain weight, and you are ready for that, then go for it. but if you want to stick to this WOE, then dont! its all about choice.

i suppose the scariest thing about going off plan, is not gaining weight, but rather if youre able to get back on the wagon. some people can - easily, like myself... but others have a harder time and end up not going back on plan and gain the weight back, plus more.

                    good luck :hug

How about have SOME rice. Some ramen. But for the most part stick to the plan. You can still have a few high carb things without totally blowing it.

I'll tell you though, for me, what keeps me on the plan is not the weight I'll put on. Honestly how much weight will you add in a week or two?? But it's how you feel. I've gone off before, like totally "hog-wild" eat whatever carbs I could get my hand on off. I did it for a long holiday weekend, so like 4 days. And I didn't put on any weight (except the 5 pounds up and down of water-weight) but I felt like absolute crap. I was sleeping 9-10 hours a day. Awful. Remember that. If you have SOME of the things you like, you'll probably be OK. But don't go totally overboard or you'll feel like crap. And I don't know if it's all in my head or what, but it sure seems like you feel worse eating high-carb after a low carb lifestyle than before I ever ate low-carb. Like your body gets used to healthy low-carb eating, and then when you switch, it hits you harder than it did before.

...and then of course you've got to ask yourself why did you do this in the first place. Is this a lifestyle change for you? Or did you just want to squeeze into your wedding dress and now you're going to march right back up to where you were? I say, Go with the first option!

                        Ricka-
Glad to hear you're jumping back in. Next time, ask for help before you leave!!! There are lots of low-carb options for traveling - some great and some not so great, but all are better than burritos! I've eaten out a lot on this diet with very little trouble! Here are just a few ideas:
                        1. Take a cooler with some food in it.
                        2. Stop at TGIFridays or Ruby Tuesdays or Red Lobster for a meal. They all have low-carb options. Don't want a sit-down meal?...
                        3. Subway has lo-carb wraps that work for eating in the car. Not the best choice depending on what rung of OWl you are on, but better than junk.
                        4. McDonalds?! They're one of the easiest places to eat low-carb! Just get a grilled chicken salad and take your own dressing! Or ask them kindly to substitute the chicken with a 1/4 lb cheeseburger patty. I've eaten lots of times there with my preschoolers. Same thing with most of the other fast food chains. And how long does it take to eat a salad on the run - 10 or 15 minutes?
Glad you enjoyed your trip - don't let lack of planning de-rail you in the future!
