  • After the diet, energy loss

I have a problem with starchy foods making my energy drop, dramatically, for up to 24 hours.

I was on Adkins full time for two years, starting in 2000, and lost 100+ lbs. Over the past two years, I've maintained the loss and kept my carb count low, eating fruit and lots of raw vegetables.

However, I've discovered that I pay a serious penalty if I eat ANY starchy foods, such as wheat, corn, potatos or rice. I'm okay with fruit, but sugary stuff like ice cream also hurts me.

Have others experienced this phenomenon? Any threads or articles you could point to?

I know I can never eat like I once did, but I would like to eat "normal" foods on occassion without having to pay the price of lethergy.

Im no expert but I thought that if you ate some fat and/or protien along with the heavy starches it would help prevent this.

are you saying if you have any of the higher rung veggies, or grains you have a problem? Or just a full serving of them? Do you remove some other carby foods when you indulge in them or are you using the banking or carb averaging system? Are you having any trouble with the legumes?

Can you eat any regular dairy other then icecream? You might have some food intolerances or be not able to breakdown the sugars in them. Have you tried one of the lactaide type things with your icecream? If that works you could be lactose intolerant. the cheeses and cream from induction have very little latose in them.

It wouldn't be a yeast thing or the fruits would mess you up worse.

I find can have a portion of what a high carb person would call a serving when I use the OWL trick of having fat with it and eating it as part of my meal. Like I had a about 1/4 cup of a sweetpotato with butter with my dinner the other day and was fine but it I had had a whole one just the sweet taste would have been enough to send me off to the binge wagon. I can eat the lower carb muellers pasta with a rich pesto sauce too. Than is all I've tried. I love my flax muffins and breads too much to give them up for whole grain bread.

Any of the starchy foods will cause a problem, including legumes. For example, a single piece of cake at a birthday party or a serving of potatos with a steak at a restaurant. Even beans in a bowl of chili. The next day I will feel "run down" or a loss of energy.

I have a theory on what may be happening, based on the idea that we all have symbiotic organisms in our gut that help us break down foods. After spending two full years on the low-carb diet -- staying under about 25 carbs a day -- the organisms that used to consume the starch in my old diet were either killed off or severely depressed. I suspect that my body now has a tough time breaking down starches.

I was hoping others had experienced this problem and had a "cure"

Those examples are a pretty big amount of the starch carbs.your symptoms sound more like a blood sugar spike then a gut problem though. But the fruit should be causing that too which is strange. Did you climb the carb ladder while doing your 25 carb loss? What if you added say 2 table spoons of beans to your all meat low carb chilli you were eating on your 25 carb plan? or a few to your already low carb salad? A potato at a steak place is several servings of potato and not very control carbed. Are you staying in your CCLM or ACE when you eat that potato and are you loadingit with fats to control the blood sugar? Is there a difference in the way you eat your fruits and your starches?

well actually the starches are first broken down by an enyme in your saliva. We do have some bacteria in our intestines that further break down the starches which is why we get gas. Have you tried taking any probiotics to replenish your gut flora? You could eat some yogurt with active cultures or swallow some capsules to re-populate your gut. They should have florished on your health carbs you were feeding them all this time. Did you take any antibiotics while you were low carbing that could have killed them?
