  • Can't assume anything can we

Took Mother to the state fair today and figured i'd lug all her stuff around ands being a goalie i'd eat there and fill my water bottle as I went. WOULD you bekieve it they didn't have one single water fountain there and water was $300 a bottle grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and they were 16 ounce bottles.

I could buy a DC or DP with lots of ice in a 44 ounce cup for $3.00 or 16 ounce bottle of water. Man it was pure torture. once again the old failing to plan is palnning to fail addage ran through my head. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The food was no problem for me as I walked by the free icecream cones, the funnel cakes, corndogs, fried chicken on a stick, chillie cheese fries, candy apples and cotton candy for the grilled sausages and the roasted veggie shack. they had all kinds of local veggies roasted from tomatoes to corn on the cob. man just deciding what i wanted was hard. I really wanted to say some of all of it please it smelled so good. As i looked down at my final selections I had to laugh cause it was all induction legal the onions, peppers, okra, eggplant, tomatoes, and sweet pumpkin for dessert.

That's awesome, 2big. When I went to our fair and the strawberry festival ealier this year, I didn't have a problem at all. Smoked Turkey Legs were available. They had roasted corn, but not the other veggies like your fair has. That sounds really, really good.

They probably had that yucky Dasani/Aquafina water for the $300 too, right? I hate that stuff....for some reason they taste bitter to me. I like a nice spring water or just regular drinking water...or plain ole tap water. Sounds like it would almost be worth it to buy a 44 oz cup of ice only and let it melt LOL

FWIW, we would be paying close to the equivalent to your $3 for a bottle of water in a pub in the UK. Some places can be even more expensive.

But you are right 2big. You cant assume anything.

Here in the land of cheese and chocolate you need to take a gold bar along to buy a bottle of water anywhere outside of the supermarkets or convenience stores - usually more than $3.00 for an 8oz and a whopping $8.00 for 64 oz in restuarants and at fairs. So we try to go well prepared, at least with water.

Went for a 4 hour hike up a mountain one day, only took 64oz of water and ran out. I nearly fell off the top of the mountain when they charged me $12.00 for a 64oz bottle!! Water must be the new gold here!!

hee I did cheat and tell the soda guy to fill it to the rim with ice and pleasee push the little tab under the Sprit nozzel so I for a 44 ice water. Since I found foods Mother could eat there next yr i will pack water and buy her stuff too.

Mother had a Blast and laughed at all the comedy stuff and enjoyed the singing and stuff she didn't care for the rides nor the aminal smells so she admired then from afar.

Not at goal, but I make the rounds for the local festivals too! There's usually so much to see and do, I forget about stopping to eat!

Water is a BIG issue. Earlier this summer, I thought I brought enough (three 20 oz bottles) but I ended up buying some (ouch!) because it was really warm that day.

I can't stand Dasani/Aquafina water either. It's reverse osmosis (remineralized)water, that's what gives it that odd taste. I actually find it tastes almost metallic. I much prefer regular spring water as well.

Any even here a small bottle of water usually runs around $2-3 as well. I will usually buy just one if we stop for something to eat or i'm really thirsty, i'm not big on carrying around my bottle of water just because it's bulky and inconvenient. Usually when i'm somewhere that i'm doing alot of walking or wont have the most convenient (or cleanest)bathrooms i try not to drink as much water as i normally would...

we should all travel with gallon size camelbacks you know!!!!

Between the absolutely insane price of water in plastic containers and the fact that they taste awful ..they make tons of trash....I am completely politically opposed on a very moral soap box about the privatization of water and how it affects third world countries...not a debate or to turn this in that direction just another reason I resent these bottled water companies ...price, the trash they make, taste and politics ...then to go to a fair and not find a place to even fill your own bottle ...that has happened to me as well...

I believe water is the elixer if life and should be encouraged and available to the masses ..to improve health, stamina and vitality ....

errrrrrrrrr...do not get me started on water.....

I resent when a restaurant charges me for it ..and I have had that happen ..when I asked for water at this pretentious place I will not mention it came in a bottle with a glass and cost $7 ..I saw the same bottle at Trader Joes the next day for $1 go figure????

its too bad it wasn't a local election yr here and the national candidates are new to the office and speding all there money on TV ads as in previous years the candidates provided water stations for free with their nams plastered all over them.

Re: Can't assume anything can we

I'm vehemently opposed to the way places/events try to rip off their captive audience of every penny in their wallets! Of course, if you look at info about it before you go and it says no food or beverages may be brought in from outside, that is a dead giveaway they want to empty your pockets once you are in!

Here's what I do in these cases:
                        1. fill up before entering - eat and drink your fill, this will help you hold out.
                        2. If it's hot, dress lightly, & pack small umbrella or wide hat if will have to be in sun a lot
                        3. Sneak stuff in. Places generally just want to maximize their profits, and won't stop you if you aren't toting large items or overly bulging pockets. a ziplock of food in each pocket and bottles of water in a fanny pack works nicely (just make sure tickets/cash are in separate compartment).
                        4. Refill strategies: get tap water in restroom, refill from an outdoor spigot or hose, buy 1 drink and carry cup all day asking for "a little extra ice" from place to place, ask for some ice "to put on a boo boo", or from the vendor with a chest-full of ice & product.

I would have settled for an outdoor spicked but there were none even the hand washing stations outside the animal areas has no water just wipes and waterfree hand washing stuff. Bathrooms were a long walk away and the sinks were too short for my water bottle as I tried that method with all the times i had to take mother in them. even she cut back on her coffee intake cause of the farness of the bathrooms.

2big - if water bottle is too tall to go under spigot 2 ways to fill it are 1. Cup hand unner faucet and channel water into sideways bottle
                            2. plug or cover drain, put water in basin, squeeze air out of bottle & invert in the water, then un-squeeze it to create a vacuum. For larger bottles, cover the bottle opening while still under water and right the bottle, then queeze out more water & repeat until full.
I can fill a 3-liter bottle this way.
