  • A little sin here and there?

I'm far from being in maintenance but I was wondering, once I reach my goal weight, would it be such a bad thing to sin a little...like once a month a pizza (european pizzas are not half as big as I always see them in american movies ) or whatever...just go over my carb limit that I have by then?
Of course I don't know yet if I'd still want that in a year or so but there are certain things...I'd just go crazy if I could never eat them again
I have a lot of discipline and am not someone to give in to temptations easily, so I can't imagine that the occasional sin could be so bad
Date to reach goal: I don't care, as long as it happens :P

Dr Atkins does mention something to this effect in DANDR. The real question is are you dead sure it won't send you on a downward spiral? I don't mean to sound hateful, but if your discipline is as strong as you claim, why are you overweight?

Hopefully, you'll be able to find a healthier, lower carb version of pizza that will just knock the socks off anything you've had so far. That way, you'll have the best of both worlds!

I think the biggest part is definately your disipline, I'm lucky that I definately do have strong willpower. I've always been able to have the occaisional treat (every couple of months) like pizza (i orderwith whole grain crust) or french fries, and not go on a binge. Without being able to do this i'm not sure i'd be as successful as I have.

I'm quite sure it won't make me go back to my old ways as long as I have my mind set to it.
See I lost 10 kg last year and thought that's it, back to what I ate before but knowledge is power and I know now that it just doesn't work like that.
What I always found funny is that I haven't eaten extremely unhealthy in the last years (and actually stayed at the same weight) but before that, during my depression, I must have lived an unhealthy live because that's the time I gained all that extra weight.
Well, that's in the past now and done with I know what I have to do.
I guess I'll just see how things go when I'm at goal

I'm in the same boat as Sadie. I'm in maintenance and I know that if I go a little bit verboard for a day, then the next day I will be in the gym and on strict induction foods. It's all about your resolve to not go back to your old ways.

Same with me, I have a cheat day maybe once a month, but even then I don't cheat at all meals....I'll only have a "treat" at one. I'm not a binge eater to begin with, for me it was a matter of getting my portion sizes under control and eating LESS carbs such as pasta, rice and bread. The day after my "treat", I'll drink more water than usual and eat 25g of carbs for a day or two, and cut out my one grain serving a day as well. This works for me.

Well... I've told myself often that ONCE, JUST ONCE... I'm gonna have pizza. Here, the pizza's are verrrrry thin crusted... almost paper thin...but you eat the whole plate, not a slice like in the USA. The funny thing is though, I never seem to do it. Scared, I suppose. I'm afraid it might become first a six monthly thing, then a monthly thing, then a weekly thing.... and so on down in a slow spiral.
Anyone else identify with this risk fear?

Sally, I identify with that every day! That's exactly how it goes for me. Just this once, then twice then it's every day and I don't even know how it happened. It seems like as soon as I loosen my grip it all slips away. It's happened to me too many times now.

Yes... that downward slope might start out gentle, but it becomes a precipice at the end!

Re: A little sin here and there?

I REAALLYYY wanted beer and chocolate yesterday .. I walked past the chocolate and biscuits in the supermarket and eventually bought a bottle of fizzy water.
And dealt with the urge to fall off the wagon.
In close to 6 weeks ... the longest I've been on a diet EVER .. I have sinned twice .. to the tune of 2 french fries and two very small biscuits. Hardly a hanging offence.

I almost felt like an alcoholic might trying to not drink.

Be tough but don't kill yourself.
I've written before here that my motivation to lose weight must exceed my need for the comfort foods I love .. otherwise this (or any other diet) will simply NOT work.
If you do succumb, forgive yourself .. but dont kid yourself .. stay focussed on your goals.
                        Start weight 233 lbs .. 16 st 9 lbs ..105.8 kg (eek!!)
.... looking to lose at least 2 stone .. (28 lbs .. for the Americans )

                          Hey Sera,

I live in The Netherlands also! The pizza's here are definitely different from in the U.S. I have only been here for a couple of months.

What do you order in restaurants? I have decided to commit to eating at home for the month of September, but soon I will be back to eating out in restaurants... I have yet to find anything that I just love out to eat. (not anything legal anyway)

rung 2 - dairy (some milk in coffee)
rung 3 - seeds, nuts (mostly sprinkled on salads)
                          rung 4 - berries, melon
                          rung 5 - wine -
                          rung 6 - beans, hummus
                          rung 7 - other fruits
rung 8 - carrots/ potatoes (nah, prolly not)
rung 9 - whole grains (fresh Dutch breads...)
                          Major Goal - 128 lbs/ healthy range
