  • Help! Climbing Kiliminjaro. Meals are all carbs.

    Hello,

I have reached my goal weight with Atkins and I m now in pre-maintenance. For my honeymoon, my husband and I are traveling to Africa to climb Kilimanjaro (one of the 7 summits) and we are going with a tour guide. He and his staff will provide all meals, and i looked at what they are providing and it's all PASTA and Bread, and HIGH calories but with carbs. I tried purchasing a bunch of sugar free beef jerkey and nuts but my husband is upset that I am even thinking of not eating what they serve because they say i need it to survive.

My post has multiple of questions. First, when my body is burning close to 4000 a day and we are under extreme conditions, does Atkins still hold strong?
Second, what are the repecutions if I eat carbs during the climb and return back to my normal diet when I return home? We will also be on the safari a week after the climb and there is no guarantee that they will have meals that don't have carbs or sugar. I am not sure how available meat meals will be.

I am so nervous and don't want all my hard work to go to waste. Please provide any advice or knowledge about extreme excercise with Atkins if possible.
    Thanks!
    Eve

    EVE,

    Congrats on reaching your GOAL!!!

How exciting, a major climb and a safari! Sounds like a scene out of a beautiful movie.

      >>they say>>

Hmmm ... well, I know people who run marathons and do low carb ...

I suspect there are mountain climbers who do low carb.

Maybe "they" are merely providing you food that is cheaper and easiest for them?

      >>don't want all my hard work to go to waste.>>

It won't ... if you get right back to doing what you were doing when you get back.

Climb it. Do what you have to do and then get back to where you were. It sounds like a serious adventure - I would follow the lead of those who arrange it.

I would assume that you are going to burn those carbs so quickly that they will never have a chance to attach themselves to your hips If it were me (and I'm not suggesting this is what you should do), I'd do what I need to do, enjoy my honeymoon and when I got home I'd go back to induction for a week or two just to make sure that the higher carbs didn't leave any lingering cravings that I need to kick to the curb. Good luck and have a great time!

It's probably too late now, as you've more than likely already been. But in a situation like this is may be helpful to contact the tour guide before you leave home - explain that you have certain dietary needs and cannot eat foods like pasta and breads. Either they will be able to provide you with alternative meals, or suggest to you what you can take with you. A good friend of mine is unable to eat anything like bread and pasta, not because she's doing Atkins but because she's highly sensitive to wheat and gluten to name but a few. If that were the case for you, you'd HAVE to have alternative arrangements!
