In 1998/99 I went on Atkins because both my younger brother and sister had had strokes and were pre-diabetic.

I started exercising and dieting in October of 98 and continued rigorous exercise through 2000, when I had to drop my gym membership due to money problems.

I started going to the free gym at the school where I teach, and so
I was able to maintain my weight at 165 pounds, more or less following Atkins, (some slight slips with quick recoveries) until September of 2003.

My husband and I returned from a trip to San Francisco, (and even with all of the fabulous eating I did, I did not put on any weight) and I developed heel spurs. Those SF hills are murder! Because I was not exercising, I started to gain some weight, but still not alot, until Thanksgiving.

At that time, I sunk into a fairly deep depression and sought comfort in all of my favorite foods, none of which are on any diet. Between Thanksgiving and May 4th of this year I put on 30 pounds, but my feet had stopped hurting.

I started out in April by gradually increasing the amount of level ground walking I did each week. That helped some. I dropped to 188. When the semester ended, I began a strict "induction" phase. I've continued to gently increase my physical activity, including getting on the stationary bike, and just parking a little farther from the school than I have to.

It's May 25th and I'm around 168, (my scale went bonkers and went from 171 one morning to 140 the next).
I enjoy being a (healthy) girl

    Starting weight 10/98 230 pounds

    Lowest weight 06/99 159

Hi I visit here occasionally but haven't posted much. I am an 80 year old woman but YOUNG AT HEART!! I am also a retired registered nurse, and since I went to nursing school at Duke University, when I learned that Duke had declared the Atkins Diet to be safe, I then decided last Sept. 2003, to give it a try, as did my 86 year old husband. We followed the diet strictly, during induction, and thru some of the first steps up the "ladder". But didn't follow it as strictly as some people seem to do, as time went on. I know enough about nutrition, that I felt I could cook as we needed to eat. So, after 9 months on the diet, I have now lost 25 pounds!! ANd this was done with doing very little exercise. Hey, folks, when you hit 80, it gets harder to exercise. Started at 181, goal was 150 (I am 5'8" tall) and now am within 6 pounds of my goal. Husband lost 18 pounds, also without exercise. And I hate to admit it, but we cheated just about every night, had a popcicle!! At our old, old age, we decided we needed to enjoy some of the privilges, OK? We also indulged in a cocktail each night, which according to the Atkins diet , it would slow our weight loss. Heck, we decided we would enjoy the cocktail and just lose the weight slower. So, aren't we the bad ones? jscott or pettewayjean

        HI ,
Just came in from the owl board. Reached goal on June 13th. Started this way of life January 1st 2004 at 157pounds. reached goal of 125 June13th!
Was losing very slowly until I found this site due to not knowing about the low carb bars. Once I dropped those my weight loss zoomed along.
I am at 49 grams of carbs a day and I still havent reached my ccl! Im sure enjoying this way of life!
I am now enjoying all the wonderful recipes on this board and the help offered!

Great web site guy's. I have lost 41 lbs since March 6/04 and my doctor is very, very happy. He commented that my goal of 159 was just based on a computer program and that if I felt good now I should not fret over the last few lbs and definitely don't rush.

I have had terrific results regarding blood pressure 120 over 80 and my doctor is thrilled with my blood work. I attribute most of this to the Atkins lifestyle and following the book to the letter...I also have found a secret that has in my opinion, supercharged my health...SEAL OIL...too bad it's not allowed ( I think ) in the U.S. You might want to check it out.

I also credit my wife for inspiration...I watched her success doing Atkins and her transformation back into the trim body that initially turned me on to her...I have now returned the favour and we have rekindled a fire that we don't intend to put out again.

            start date Mar 6/04
            goal 159

Thanks for giving me a chance to sound off.
            Regards,
            Chris

              Hi everybody!
I started Atkins induction last June 2003.
I weighed around 125 lbs and wanted to lose 10 pounds.
I got down to 120-119 and got stuck there for months.
I finally reached goal in April of 2004.
Now that i am at goal weight I have so many more choices and can eat more and maintain. I love it!
