So today I ate the same as induction. Tomarrow Im going to eat a new veggie when I figure out which one I wanna add; but heres my question....
Is it ok to eat the 20 induction carbs when Im owl or do I NEED to eat the rungs everyday and add the rungs. Can I go back and fourth as long as Im not skipping rungs or does it work the same way with decreasing as it does with increasing? Some days I just may feel like eating induction foods and I dont have the energy to add to the diet. Will this hinder my progress?

    Hey "somethingtowork"
The purpose of Ongoing Weight Loss is to find the amount of carbs your body will need for life. It is a process of adding 5 carbs per week until your start to gain weight. That is how you determine your CCLL (Please read this stickie if you haven't already.)
So when you add a new food from the Carb Ladder rung you are also adding 5 carbs to your week.
For example, I did my two weeks of Induction, eating 20 carbs per day until I was finished with Induction.
When I came over to OWL I upped my carbs to 25 carbs, adding new vegetables from the OWL list. This past week I've added 5 more carbs and am adding foods from the Dairy rung. In the weeks to come I will add different foods but I will also be adding more carbs per week.
Please take time to read the chapter on Ongoing Weight Loss from the newest edition (2000) of Dr. Atkins book. He does a very nice job of explaining how this critical phase of your food plan works. Remember: This is NOT a diet, it is an entire change in your eating lifestyle.

    Hang in there!
    Be well-

I had a feeling this was how it worked since I do have the book and did read it. But from what I understand once I figure out how many carbs I can eat without weight gain I can go back down to the amount where Im losing. Im thinking about going back to extended induction because I still want to lose weight rapidly and only really wanted to add a few things and a few more carbs. Can I just stay and rung 1 and move on as I feel comfortable? And then also if I just eat like induction food a few days a week will this hinder me?? That is the only part Im not understanding.

I've wondered this as well. I'm in this weird limbo, as my 14-day induction ended on Sunday, and now I'm just doing extended induction by default until I am confident to move on.

I think what you're asking is:

Are we required to up our carbs by 5g everyday? Or can we still stay at our induction levels for a few days of the week?

I think this is the thing that's been holding me back from OWL (silly, I know).

          Hi Jade,

I was wondering, if you increased 5g carbs and add foods from the Dairy rung and you do stall, how would you know it is because of the 5g increase or if it's because of a particular food?

I was of the understanding that you don't increase 5g carbs at the same time you are adding a new food?

          Cheers

When you first increase the carbs, you increase it by 5 nets everyother day. So over the course of Week 1, you'll be eating 5 extra carbs 3 or 4 days. On Week 2, you'll eat 5 extra net carbs every day.

As for increasing carbs and trying out new foods from a new Rung, you can do it. But it gets tricky because you'll have to figure out what's affecting you: the carb level, the food or both. If you do this (and it's okay to do so), use the Blood Sugar Symptom test in Chapter 12 or 13 to monitor how the food is affecting you.

Ok, that settles it. I'm starting OWL on Monday. I'll continue doing extended induction for the rest of this week. Yippee! I'll be re-reading all the stickies between now and then

I have found that if it is almost that TOM, my CCLL is not the same (or else I can't track it accurately during the TOM). Not sure. Still trying to figure out OWL. I did print out the rungs of the ladder and post it on my fridge which helps!! Also a picture of my pre preganant body! That helps the most :yes
