I know its recommended, but is it really necessary that we go through the veggie rung? I've never been a big fan of vegetables, and I'm already sick of them.

    Re: Veggies

    Hey Matt,
One thing that helped me on the 'veggie rung' was to try some veggies that I had never eaten before like daikon. It is a Japanese radish. It's really crunch and tastes great! I would encourage you to pick up a few of the veggies you haven't tried before and give them a go!

    Be well-

Skipping rungs isn't advisable, but not explicitly forbidden.

You do need vegetables though, if you haven't found any you like, you just haven't eaten the right ones, or had then prepared the right way yet. Keep trying new things until you find some you do like.

Have you tried broccoli sauteed in butter? OMG, it is so good. So simple too! I never really liked vegetables either, until I found good ways to prepare them. Don't forget that fat is your friend, so give em all a little pat of butter, or smother them in cheese, or dip them in dressing.

          Hi Matt,

I bet you love your lamb right?

Well, I was wondering, why don't you put in some veggies into whatever stew you are making and at the end put all of the liquid and veggies through a strainer or puree them, so you end up with a thick sauce with your meat/fish/seafood.

I think you also mentioned a veggies-only period coming up in another one of your posts? why not blend or puree your veggies and make soup out of them? Add plenty of garlic, even tofu pieces, parsley and you can make the veggie soup taste pretty nice

If I remember right, when I was in Egypt last year, the Egyptians make fabulour baba ganouk, right? Roasted mashed eggplant dip is another way of getting through your veggie rung!

I too am a reformed veggie hater. Never have I like veggies, but since starting this Woe, I have made myself try so many new things, that I can now confess that there are about 10 veggies that I truly love to eat. So many things taste good with cheese :yes

Thanks everybody for the replies. I guess I'll take some of the suggestions that you guys made.

tickletussler, haha..ya the baba genouk is pretty good, and the tahina also. When I was in Egypt last year, at the same time of year as now, we were in the fasting period and there was this amazing resteraunt called Gad in new Cairo (masr el gadida), they have amazing baba genouk.

I'm on the veggie rung and I'm not sure what you mean by "working through" it. Does that mean you have to try all the vegetables on the list before you go on to the next rung. I sure hope not because there are a lot on that list I do not like. :tounge

No, you do not have to try all the veggies on the list.. I just suggest trying some new ones every now and then to see if your tastes may have changed :nod

Sorry for bothering you all again, but I have another question. After I'm done with the veggie rung do I need to continue eating those veggies every week, or can I just eat the 5 g of whatever rung I'm on, and something else to fit in place of the veggies?

No I don't think you have to continue eating those veggies, but you are encouraged to do so, because there's absolutely nothing that says veggies are not good for you Trying out new veggies/a new food is a way for your body to work out if a particular food is causing you to stall, that's why Dr A set up the rungs like he did.

The only thing you need to do, as the mods suggest is NOT increase 5g carbs at same time as trying a new food - because when you do stall, you won't know if it's because of the new food or because you have found your ACE/CCLL

I hope this answers your last question? ie you eat increase 5g with whatever you've eaten before OR stay where you are for carb amount whilst trying the new food in the current/new rung.

                      Cheers

So would that mean that you find your CCLL on the veggie rung? Or should you just climb the ladders without increasing your carb intake? Which one would be better/easier?

Well, everyone's different Matt. We all do OWL in different ways

What I am trying to say is during the same week you introduce a new food, you DON'T ALSO do the 5g carb increase.

Some of us do a Modified OWL which is stay at one carb level whilst trying new foods and going through the rungs.

Others keep increasing 5g until they find their CCLL. It means they know how high they can go before they stall. For example, if you find that your CCLL is 50g, then you know this is your maximum limit and you can then go through the rungs and don't neccessarily NEED to eat all those 50g a day - you can go under depending on what you eat on that day.

But I think most OWLers alternate trying new foods/rungs with increasing their CCLL, because if you think about it, if you stay on 30g carbs, there are some foods in the higher rungs that would put you beyond the 30g so you are forced to increase your 5g carbs anyway.

                          Hope that wasn't too confusing?

So would it be okay if I went up to 25 on veggies, then stayed on 25 for dairy, and nuts and seeds? And later find my CCLL on the berry rung? I really hope this is okay, because I really miss berries. Even though I didn't eat them that often, I still really crave them. (Well, not crave as much as it is want)

Hit the Farmers markets too. Fresh home grown veggies taste way better than store bought ones.

I agree also to try preparing them differently. Saute or shish-ke-bob veggies for the BBQ. Mushrooms and peppers are yummy just off the BBQ.
