  • Any Suggestions for TOM?

    Hey All,
    Have been in a bit of a 'black hole' for the past few days w/PMS. I'm back on track today but do any of you vets have any 'tricks of the trade' for PMS and TOM?
    I would appreciate any/all input!

    You have my sympathy jade. Before my TOMs, I crave anything salty and have a tendency to overeat them if I allow myself.

      Hey Megs,
      Thanks! That is me too! Salty and then something just a little sweet! Someone told me a long time ago that if you crave those things it's because your body is really craving protein! I don't know if that's true but when I had some cheese I did feel a little better. It seemed to take the edge of the cravings off.
      I'm sure that if I just stick to program I will probably be ok.

        I like salty/ sweet too. I usually eat some pickles, or few pepperoni slices.. ANd I have that whipped cream in a can with splenda. sometimes, just a squirt of that will do the trick for me. Good luck!!

          ohh man I can SO relate...today was the beginning of the worst TOM I have had in YEARS. I feel like CRAP but I refused to cheat on my diet, I am proud I didn't. I am craving some cream cheese with splenda, which i dont have at my house....but I don't think it's a good idea for me to go get any, because when TOM comes and I crave, I WILL binge on whatever I am craving...I don't trust myself to have it in the house this week! The only time of day I actually felt decent, believe it or not, was when I went to go exercise! My cramps disappeared, but after I was done they did come back I ALMOST used TOM as an excuse not to go, but I said to myself if I was REALLY hurting once I got there and started working out, then I'd stop...but I wasn't. It felt great!

            haha I used to dip salty french fries in my ice cream or milkshake when TOM was here...lol. no more of that

              Hey love2beeamom!
              I didn't know they made whipped cream sweetened w/splenda in a can! I gotta get me some of that! I had a better day today. I did an Induction day as I've been off program for a few days. It felt good to ride my bike this morning and to eat program food!

                Hey Clare,
                Thanks for sharing! I felt the same way you did this morning but I knew if I rode my bike I would feel better and I did! But I felt crummy afterwards. However, I went ahead with my day of Induction while suffering through a migraine (I get one before my TOM every month) thankfully I have some good meds! And because it was so hot outside I didn't do much today but run a few errands and then I laid down! I slept for a long time! I think my body was asking for 'shut down' time as I've been so busy lately.
                I know what you mean about binging. I'm proud of you that you stayed on program. I did not make it! Yesterday I had a binge that I've not had in a long time. I sure paid for it today but that's ok. I deserved it. I don't know why I ever go off program. I always feel SO BAD when I do! When I work out and stay with program I feel so wonderful! But PMS/TOM does weird things to my mind! I become totally mental!
                Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience! Hang in there! You are the inspiration of the day for me!

                    *So are you girl! I've been on the program since May 1st so I am on full program now. However, one thing that happens to me is that after I begin my cycle I'm no longer hungry. Making yourself eat (to me!) is just as bad as having cravings! My body will shut down if I don't eat so I try to get in at least 20 carbs a day during this time. Lots of water too. You might want to up your water during TOM as some of the cravings may be due to dehydration! Dehydration can really do a number on your body!

                          My dog is like that with wrappers, especially American cheese wrappers. He hears that crunching sound and he's there! Too funny.

                          It's made by Land O Lakes and it's in a purple can. VERY yummy and I also use it to satisfy a sweet craving - just a squirt is all it takes.
