  • Need some high calorie food ideas

I struggle every day to eat enough calories. Gawd, I can't imagine ever saying that before Atkins! According to Fitday, my BMR is 1636 and I can't remember what my AMR is, but I am very active and I struggle just to get to my BMR. If I do eat below it, it's not that much most days - maybe a 100 or so calories.

I get my calories up most days by having heavy cream or butter with stuff, which is fine because I love both of those! I eat my blueberries with cream.

My weight loss is soooooooooooo slow. I usually drop a couple of pounds, then my body contemplates world events for a month or so before dropping a couple more. This week I am due a drop and I want it!

Anyway, I need some ideas for higher calorie food items, besides cream, which ~could~ be a reason for my slow loss. Any ideas would be helpful, because I'm thinking my body thinks I'm trying to starve it and it's being very stubborn about dropping those pounds.

I did finally take my measurements last week!

Thanks for any suggestions OWLers! Oh and I eat from all of the rungs, so suggest away!

When I need to up my fat or calories I dip my veggies in Dill Dip. That ups the taste AND calorie/fat content, and it's super low in carbs. It doesn't cause me to stall, but then I don't have to eat much, either.

depends what rung you are at? but if you are at the Nut rung try them..just watch the carb counts their different for different varietys, but they pack a good amount of calories...adding butter to your veggies, mayo is also quite high incals (have egg salad, tuna salad etc.)

I love adding mayo to stuff. Or full fat salad dressings with your veggies. Maybe fattier cuts of meat? I have kinda your same problem, but kinda the opposite--I feel like I eat too much fat but still too little calories.

          Nuts!

I eat way too many but they're dee licious

          They are also really healthy.
Just avoid the salted nuts because they're too easy to eat and cause water retention.

I would go for nuts too - I'm trying to keep some with me at the office so if I get the munchies during the day I have something legal that keeps me away from the sweets machine. Dangerous item to have installed.... wonder if I should ask to have it removed on health and safety grounds lol?

I agree with the nuts suggestion, especially since you are an active person. I stick with a mix of almonds and machadamia (sp?) I also use a little condiment cup to keep my portion size under control.

Thanks everyone! I forgot about nuts!

I have the almond/macadamia nut mixture and I eat them occasionally, but I will have to eat them more often! I also love pecans, so I will add those for variety.

whoa.....I am way new. But am I getting this right....if you dont eat ENOUGH fat your body could go into starvation mode??? and cause a stall?

My loss is so slow....I've been treating a yeast overgrowth but I'm certain thats under control. I only have keto - breath every once in a while and I only lose a few lbs a month.....

It's not eating enough calories on a regular basis that can cause your body to go into starvation mode. Your basal metabolic rate, or BMR, is the minimum calorie requirement needed to sustain life in a resting individual. Looked at it like the amount of energy (measured in calories) used by the body to remain in bed asleep all day! There are calculators available on many websites, but that number is not set in stone, and will go down as you lose. Many factors affect it, so it's more like a guideline. You also have your Active Metabolic Rate (AMR) which is higher depending on your activity level... and to safely lose weight and not send your body into starvation mode, you need to eat calories that total somewhere in between the two, but at least your BMR. If your body doesn't think it's getting enough fuel, it will hold onto it's stored fuel (fat).

Atkins is a high fat, medium protein, low carb diet, and while on induction, your percentages for the day should be around 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs. When you come to OWL and search for your CCLL, your carb count will go up some and your fat level will come down some....... BUT, for some people, eating more fat helps them lose faster. In fact, Dr. Atkins wrote that if you were in a true stall, to try lowering your proteins some and upping your fats some. We also have to adjust based on our own individual needs.

We're all basically walking science experiments, trying to figure out our bodies secret recipe for success, and no two of us are alike, so we ask a lot of questions and plod through our journey trying to figure it all out!

ok....well then I'm definately not getting enough calories. I just figured my BMR @ 1680 calories per day. My AMR is somewhere around 2300. My problem is how do you get all those calories in???? this really boggles my mind!!!

So far I see heavy whipping cream is high calories, low carb......packs a punch of 720 cal. per 8oz. so what if I drink 8oz of this a day??? does anyone see anything wrong w/ that to get my calories up????

Post a couple of days worth of menues (include the amounts you eat too, for example 3 slices bacon, 3 eggs, etc.)

Re: Need some high calorie food ideas

                          yesterday:

                          2 bratwurst ( carbs = 0) w/ zero carb ranch
for dinner I had a taco salad (meat/seasoning(1/2 cup), lettuce, moz cheese (1 oz), 2 tble spoon sour cream & no carb ranch.

                          Today:

1 no carb bratwurst, w/ no carb ranch & 1packet of taco bell mild sauce.

For lunch I had chicken salad: 1 full chicken breast, 1 oz moz. cheese, 1/2 slice of bacon, no carb ranch, 1 hard boiled egg.

drank 8oz heavy whipping cream w/ 1 packet of splenda.

Re: Need some high calorie food ideas

8 ounces of heavy cream are way too much for OWL. The OWL limits are 1/2 cup (4 fluid ounces).

You might want to add extra calories with breakfast: have a omelette with that bratwurst or make a crustless quiche.

Look at your ranch dressing too. You can thin it out with bland tasting olive oil....just 1 tablespoon of olive oil provides about 100 calories.

What rung are you on, by the way? Because it doesn't seem like you're getting enough veggies in (even for Induction level amounts).

Actually, I started this in april before I had even read the book, so I dont really know alot about the rungs that you all talk about. I guess I should read through that part of the book huh?? LOL.

Ok, so I can have 4 oz of heavy cream, add olive oil to my salads, what else can I have thats high cal??? I'm at a loss for ideas.....

1680 calories just seems so much too me. I'm eating less and less at every meal.

Any ideas on incorporating veggies would be appreciated also.
