The same amount of carbs as in the other rungs of OWL, 5 net carbs worth.

        Re: Popcorn

Corn would be the 10th rung - not the 8th I would have thought although I see it does appear on the 9th in the sticky that details the rungs
but when you get to the grains rung - according to www.fitday.com one cup of raw corn is
Total Carbohydrate 29.29g - Dietary Fiber 4.16g = about 25 net carbs so one fifth of a cup would be 5 net carbs.
If you are popping your own corn then you can put 1/5 cup in the machine and see how much of a cup of popcorn that works out to - and then you would know how big a bag of bought popcorn you could eat.
But in UK at least all readymade popcorn has added other things like syrup or flavourings so you might be better with homemade instead - at least then you can control any added stuff.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

... and if you make your own, you definitely can add just butter to it - the fats in the butter will help slow the carb absorption of the popcorn into the bloodstream - you know, for the same reason that you eat berries with cream!

I just get a large at the movies and eat until I get a stomachache.
Extremely bad behavior...fortunately I only see a movie every 2 months or so.

Who could eat 1/5 of a cup of popcorn?

To me, its a trigger food. Popcorn is *still* corn, which means its a starch, so another form of that dastardly SUGAR. I've sworn it off for life and you know, its really NOT that hard to give up.

If you are one of the lucky few who can eat corn and other foods from that rung, I don't see why not - after all there is a lot of nutrients and fibre in corn.

If you are even luckier still to be able to eat popcorn on Maintenance and as the odd treat, then why not?

                    Re: Popcorn

You'll really have to read the packages for the carb count on popcorn. If you buy it pre-made, you'll have to read the packages not only for the carb count and serving size but also for any additives like sugar.

If you pop it yourself, look at the nutritional info on the bag. It will say what 1 serving size (of the unpopped kernels) are. It varies with the brand of unpopped kernels because the size of the corn kernels vary.

I pop my own popcorn. That way I can control the salt and the oil (and make sure I'm not eating hydrogenated oils).

My 2 cents about popcorn is that it's one of the better snack foods because it's made from largely unprocessed, unrefined whole grain. However, once you start eating the chemical coated crap in the microwave bags or the stuff at the movies dunked in mystery butter flavoring, you'll lose the natural goodness.

One time the clerk bitched me out because I asked if there were trans-fats in the popcorn butter. He said is wasn't butter but just flavored soybean oil.

Isn't it a starch? What grain is it made from?

The 'popping corn' we can buy in UK is just kernels of what we call 'corn on the cob' or maize.

Corn is technically a grain. The corn plant is a type of grass, like wheat, barley, rye, etc. The corn kernels are the seeds of the corn. So it does have starch, like peanuts, seeds and nuts do.

I checked my bag of popcorn kernels. For this brand (which is a cheapo store brand), 3 tablespoons unpopped is 1 serving. 26 total carbs per serving and 5 fiber grams. So 1 tablespoon unpopped is about 7 net carbs. 2 teaspoons unpopped is about 4.6 net carbs. But again, check the bag of your popcorn kernels as they do vary---I have another bag where 1/4 cup unpopped was 1 serving.

I just bought those 100 calorie packs of popcorn. It says that one pack (a tiny bag of popcorn) is only 20 carbs and 3 grams dietary fiber ergo, about 17 grams net.

I just started back on this diet after success and then months of relapse. I know it's probably not great for the induction period, but for those on maintenance, these 100 calorie packs with 17 net carbs can't be as sinful as some have put it.

                              Any ideas?
