  • Papaya??

I wonder if anyone knows what rung papaya is on?

I have never eaten it but the local cheap supermarket has them at half price.

    Edited to add:
Of course if I had looked at Loonatika's 'power of 5' sticky I wouldn't have had to ask

Yeap, your right. Papaya actually shouldn't be attempted until pre-maintenance as it is on on medium GI range along with mangos and kiwi. Actually I can easily live without papaya as I think its is low taste compared with other fruits.

I'll have to disagree here "papaya" (as is known in most SE Asian countries) or "paw paw" is an extremely delicious fruit.

Elizellen, what does your papaya look like?
the SE Asian ones are longish - up to around a foot long, 15cm or so in diameter, with dark orange flesh. Skin varies from a pale to dark orange colour with green smatterings. The flesh has the consistency more akin to rockmelon, but not as "juicy". It has a deep sweet taste and when very ripe simply falls apart in the mouth
Paw paw (what we get in Australia) - shorter, stouter, a pale yellow skin with pale orange flesh. It tends to have a firmer flesh even when ripe. A milder taste than its SE asian cousin.

If you're interested, here are more descriptive links about the fruit:

The ones here are the second type you described - look like a pear.

              Re: Papaya??

Not yet as I havent reached the 'other fruits' rung :-(
But I did have a teeny tiny piece (about a fingernail clipping's worth) when I prepared it for my husband and it really tasted sweet!
Ah well I can have them next year no doubt!!
When I looked online for how to prepare and serve them I found that if you dry the seeds you can use them as peppercorns! Not done that yet but when I empty my #2 peppermill I just might try it.

Really? You can use them as peppercorns? Fancy that!!! You share some and you learn some I just never thought they'd work well as peppercorns because years agos I accidentally chewed on some seeds and they tasted awfully bitter. But then maybe drying them and using peppercorns could be different. You will let us know when you get round to it, what it tastes like?

2Big, have you found the nutritional info on the American pawpaw? My neighbor has a paw paw in their yard. By neighborly agreement, any fruit that falls into my yard, I can keep.

Oh oh, papaya skin makes the best face mask. I lived in Mexico and all the ladies swore by it.
I didn't know that pawpaw was papaya, and I always wondered what pawpaw was. Learn something new every day on this board.
The only way that I can eat papaya is dripping in lime juice and salt. Then I must agree its delicious. In Mexico they are the size of watermelons but I see them here in Japan about pear size.

that's the same papaya we get here too Elizellen, but the Aussies call them paw-paw. The flesh is firmer than the asian version but sweet nonetheless. I would not eat the skin of either kinds of papaya that I konw, because they taste really really bitter - pity though, esp if most of the fibre and fat is contained in the skin as 2big says.
