  • Argh! I gained weight

Well I've done 1 week of OWL and I weighed myself and I've gained 3 pounds back... Is this normal????

I admit I have been drinking alot of diet soda and not enough water though. I have reintroduced fruits back into my diet etc..

Anyone have the same experience??? I lost 15.5 pounds in induction btw.

You jumped directly to the fruits rung - skipping the veggies/cheeses/seeds & nuts rungs altogether-, have been drinking a lot of diet soda & cut your water intake dramatically? Yep. No mystery as to why you see a gain on the scale, although I'm sure most of it is water retention- assuming you're keeping your fruit portions in check.

What exactly did you add in and how much of it?
Get your water intake back up where it belongs and cut that soda dramatically (sodium sodium sodium!).

, so that might be your problem.
Fruits are not the first rung of OWL - more of the induction veggies are.

Also you might be retaining water if you are drinking diet drinks instead of plain water - are they sweetened with aspartame which stalls many people? And we are only allowed 3 servings per day of sweetener on Atkins.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

        Not Arrrggh at all.

You said you've been drinking "alot" of diet soda and not enough water. Just remember the artificial sweetener amounts DO NOT change throughout the Atkins diet. It's 3 servings during Induction and 3 servings on OWL and Pre-Maintenance. Dr. Atkins hoped that we would wean ourselves from that added sugar taste and learn to appreciate the natural sweetness of foods.

Also, you've added fruit. That's the beauty of OWL. You learn what foods do not agree with your body. Make sure that you have been eating only 5 net carbs of the fruit---remember 1 cup of anything does not automatically equal 5 net carbs. Don't get lazy and sloppy with your measurements and carb counts. Were you also eating the fruit with fat, like cream or a nut-flavored oil to help blunt the blood sugar response?

It sounds like you probably over-loaded your body with the sweet-taste. Go to the 14 Day Induction Forum and read the stickie post called "Addicted to Sweets" to see if that applies to you. I notice that you skipped rungs 1-3 and added fruits, you don't say what kind of fruits, but fruits generally have a slightly higher glycemic index in comparison to the veggies, dairy and nuts you skipped over. Read the stickie in this forum called "How to OWL". 2Big has some great information in there about skipping rungs.

So my advice is to drop the fruit and see what happens to your weight loss

          Re: Argh! I gained weight

Until I got myself mentally back on track with my Atkins I stalled for several months. I'd be fine at home and work, eating right and exercising from April when I joined the exercise challenge forum. But having staff discount at my local supermarket (weekend job) has meant that I'm surrounded by high-sugar and high-carbohydrate foods so I've not always managed to eat right at the weekends.

I decided that enough was enough. No more chocolate for me because I know that one bar won't be enough... and I'm doing without alcohol because I know that's a bad trigger for me too socially.

Basically what I'm saying is make your mind up to do Atkins properly and you'll feel the benefits of it fast. I'm approaching unknown territory on my scales and am thrilled.
