  • Question about going up the rungs

I am currently on extended induction but I would really like to get info and be ready when I move to OWL. My question is this: If I am normally eating 2 cups of lettuce and 1 cup of broccoli/cauliflower salad on induction, when I move to OWL could I just add 1 more serving of the broc/caul. salad since it figures to about 4 carbs per serving? So then I would eat 2 cups of lettuce and 2 cups of broccoli/caul. salad a day and that would be considered moving up to the veggie rung?

I love this broccoli salad and would like to eat more than one cup a day of it. If this is true, then could I stay at rung 1 as long as I want because right now all I want is some more veggies. Or is there a timetable for moving on? I know the book suggests staying there for 3 weeks or something but could I stay for 2 months at each rung if I wanted to?

I have a LOT to lose so I can be patient moving into OWL and up the rungs.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Kelly

You can stay on any rung for as long as you want to. There is no time limit. Some people stay on the veggie rung until they find their CCLL and then move on.

You are correct with the broccoli/cauliflower question. Try to add other veggies, too. I've been having a great time with this. Jicama and turnips are great substitutes for potatoes and I love them fried.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Good luck!

I would not solely eat broccoli. You need to eat a variety of veggies of different colors and types. Broccoli also has some toxins which can collect in your body if you eat tons of it.
Anyways sounds like you're doing well and you can eat pretty much whatever you want keeping under your carb count.
If you keep losing weight at a decent pace there is no harm in moving up the ladder/carb count and in some respects it's more healthy to do that by widening your variety of food.

Yes, I will eat more than just broccoli, it's just when I make it it's so yummy. I just used that as an example - but when I decide to make a batch, I may have to have a little extra.

Also, if I am on rung 1 veggies, I can try any extra veggie in the 5 carb range? For example, extra broccoli on Monday, 5 carbs of jicama on Wednesday, 5 carbs of asparagus Friday, etc. or just introduce one new veggie for a couple of weeks at a time?

It's not a big deal, especially if you cook it.
It's like your body can process x amount of the toxin but if you eat x+1 every day it can build up.
My point isn't to scare people about broccoli but to get them to eat a variety.

Re: Question about going up the rungs

Broccoli, soybeans, cauliflower, cabbage, and some other veggies are said to be goiterogenic. In that they can cause goiters because they compete with the thyroid gland for iodine.

Spinach has a oxalic acid. Oxalic acid can prevent your body from absorbing iron and calcium. Granted, you'll have to eat alot of raw spinach consistently, to get this effect, but still...

Anyhow, moderation is the most cautious thing to do, that's why I try to stay within the Atkins portion sizes----overeating good things is still overeating and it's not gonna help me in the long run.
