I'm just wondering at what point is ketosis harmful to the liver. I realize that if you're drinking enough water, your body should not have a problem eliminating the ketones. However, how would you know when ketones are reaching a danger level?
I remember my mother saying that she did Atkins way back when it first came out. Her doctor required her to take a weekly blood test to monitor her ketone levels so that she would not become toxic. Now, my mother does not have any underlying health problems that would warrent that in general.
However, I am on a medication that does require regular blood testing to make sure liver levels remain normal. I am concerned that perhaps the ketosis will overload my liver and I will become toxic. I did ask my doctor about doing Atkins before I started, and she said that she didn't see any problem with me doing it and me being on the meds that I am. But, I do get freaked out when the ketosticks turn very dark purple when I don't get enough water in a day.
I realize that no one here can give medical advice, but any feedback on ketosis related toxicity would be appreciated.
