what's the deal with cabbage? it's listed on the OTHER VEGETABLES list... but it's actually lower in carbs than jicama by a LONG ways......and jicama is on the induction ok list.....

I like stewed cabbage...and the chart in front of the book says it has 1.9 gm carb for 1/2 cup... whereas jicama has 5.7 for 1/2 cup.... what's the deal?

why would jicama be ok for induction.. but not cabbage?

is there some bad thing about cabbage that I've overlooked?

I can never figure that out myself. Which is why I think Atkins Nutritionals, Inc is out of their minds saying that you can eat 4 cups of the "salad" list veggies daily. Anyhow....

I think cabbage is on the "other" list due to poor editing. Parts of DANDR 2002 were a copy and paste job of DANDR 92. In the 1992 diet, the "other list" were measured cooked and limited to 2/3 cups. In the 2002, the veggies that cook down a considerable amount are measured raw---I'm assuming this was so that you don't slurp down 1 cup of cooked tomato which has about 12 net carbs. Cooked cabbage has about 6 net carbs per cup.

Also, the lists are generally divided according to the carb % of the veggie. The "salad" list veggies have less than 5% carbs. The "other" list veggies have 6-10% carbs. These are total carbs, by the way, not net carbs---which is another difference between the 2002 diet and the 1992 diet. The 1992 diet didn't subtract fiber.

      Re: cabbage¿

I was accidentally eating 2-3 cups of cabbage per day whiile on induction. Mentally, I think of cabbage as being interchangable with lettuce. That's another good thing about OWL... I just eat the veggies I want and make sure I count them. I have blurred the lines between the two lists of veggies.

Sneaking in from Induction forum because I saw the 'cabbage' post. 1 c of cabbage a day is permitted on induction according to the sticky print out I have of allowable foods..it is not listed in the salad vegies though. I am making a hamburger stroganoff with it tomorrow.
