  • Starting OWL this weekend

After being on induction for 3 wks. now, I decide to make the jump and try OWL. I am a little scared to try it and hope I continue to lose weight. This is not my first time on this WOE so I know what to expect and eat. I also know it will take me a little longer to lose too, which is fine.

Trust me, if I have any problems with this, you will all hear about it. What supportive groups I have found here at

I've loved the food choices on OWL.. and yeah.. it slowed down my weight loss... but it's kept my sanity.. .. and made me realize I CAN do this for a long time to come...

the first week or so really wasn't very different at all for me... just a few more veggies... less meat and cheese and eggs.....

but I kept wanting things like my yogurt that I couldn't have on induction... so OWL it was! and I'm glad I did it... so welcome to OWL

Did you figure out your degree of metabolic resistance to weight loss on Day 15 of the diet by looking at the charts in Chapter 13? If you have an average to low degree of metabolic resistance, you shouldn't be afraid to eat over 15-20 net carbs of food---at all--- because your body will be able to accomodate more than 20 and still lose weight.

The only people who need to stay on Induction level carbs longer than 14 days are the folks who have a high metabolic resistance to weight loss and/or have alot of metabolic imbalances and need that extra time to normalize them. The rest of us can move on and eat a more balanced and varied diet while continuing to lose weight.

/QUOTE] No, I haven't checked my metabolic resistance but at day 15 but I did stay on induction for an extra week anyway. Right now would be a hard time to check that too because I have gained 3 lbs due to my TOM so that would not be accurate either. I guess I will have to wait until after that is over and see where I am at. Otherwise, I will just go back to induction again.

Doesn't matter if you stayed on Induction an additional 5 weeks. The degree of metabolic resistance is figured out by the amount of weight you lost during the first 14 days of Induction only. That's why we harp on folks to do a "clean Induction" because the results are so very important. So whatever you lost during the first 2 weeks is what's going to determine your metabolic resistance.

Not sure that applies in the same way on the second time around. We tend to lose more slowly and it isn't an accurate way to gage metabolic resistence. So for example, someone who lost 16 lbs the last time around during the first two weeks might only lose, say 4 this time.
              Started Atkins 2d time 6/20/05
              218/187/140
              Measuring every 2 weeks
As of 10/31/05, losta total of 56.75 inches!

                Re: Starting OWL this weekend

I think it depends on what kind of "second timer" you are. If you are the type who was on Atkins, fell off and returned after a year or two of being off the program, the 14 days Induction might determine your degree of metabolic resistance just as well as it did the first time around because your second time body is probably as metabolically screwed up as it was the first time. If you are the type of second timer who bounces on and off Atkins monthly/weekly/daily, then you're better off going with whatever results you had the very first time you did the 14 day Induction because all that yo-yoing has probably done more harm to your metabolism than good.

And I also think it depends on what kind of Atkineer you were during the previous attempts and the current one. If you're still in the "I want my cake and eat it too" mentality and are pushing the limits of the Induction phase, ie: a cup of regular coffee here or there, 4 servings of sugar subsitute instead of 3, a "bite" of this thing, a couple of strawberries here or there, etc., then you might not get the same or better results as you did before.
