  • New to OWL

Hello everyone! New here today. I did 2 weeks induction and 2 weeks extended induction...giving me a total of 15 pounds gone. I started today even though I am not really ready as I have no new vegies in the house. So will try to up my carbs with the ones I do have...which happen to be the ones I mainly eat anyway.

Do I have to stay here and try every veg I might eat in the future?? For instance....we will have squash ready in a couple of weeks but it is not ready now...and I would only be eating it a few times and then probably not til next year...or maybe more since I am quite enjoying the vegies daily. Asparagus is another we have in our garden but do not buy in the store as that costs too much. But do want to try the Jicama.

My goal is to have at least 4 servings of vegies a day during OWL and maintance. 2 salads and 2 other.

Do I have to spend the same amount of time at each rung?

Is there a COMPLETE list anywhere that lists ALL VEGIES and whether they are to be eaten on this rung or the starches rung....?? If I understand correctly...for instance...all squash is not created equal. Having a visual list to refer to would be very helpful. I had never even heard of jicama before.

I am sure that I will have many more questions so please be patient with me. Thanks!

    Re: New to OWL

I'm starting too! Actually, I started Monday.

I'm not doing the one day on and one day off thing on the veggie rung because I know that even by adding 5 grams of veggie carbs I'm still only slightly above 20 grams net. And I also know that I can eat a lot more carbs than that and still lose.

I think www.atkins.com has a list of all of the veggies and their carb counts, but I'm not sure.......I just use fitday......

Check Loonatika's sticky in this forum called the "Power of Five" It's not a complete list, but a lot of them are in there and it breaks it down by rung so you know which veggies are rung 1 and which are the starchy ones for later.

            Re: New to OWL

check out the stickies there is no one day on and one day off for OWL there was a typo in DANDR and it is supposed to say a new food 3 days the first week not a new food group 3 days/

Dr Atkins so you could better see how and control any bad blood sugar cravings you might get from a new to you food restricted it to 3 times a week the first week it is new to you.

Check your squash as those ready in a few weeks will be winter squash and they are on the starchy vegies list rung not the first rung veggies. those are the same ones as induction so you just add 5 more net carbs of those acceptable veggies from either of the induction lists to your induction 3 cups and see how your body handles it. You can go slow if you are a slow loser to make sure you didn';texceed your CCLL or you can move sppedily up the ladder. it is up to you. OWL is the great food experiemnt. just remember every time you add noe rungs you have 2 changes going on more carbs and a higher GI food group. some folk react to food groups some react to higher carbs when their weight loss stops and it will be up to you to test and retest to see is it the food group that food or the more carbs that stopped your weight loss and/or gave you the cravings.

Elsie150 did you know according to Dr Atkins goalies have 6-8 cups of veggies a day? I hope you are planning on big servings if your goal is just 4 servings. According the the USDA definition of serving size inductees already are having around 6 servings of veggies a day.

              Re: New to OWL

Thanks Finelly, Effie and 2big. I have read the stickies that is always the first thing I do...doesn't always mean I understand them all...LOL. The atkins site does have a long list of vegies in order of GI I think.
2big...my dinner salad last night had 2 oz romaine, 2 1/2 oz cucumber, 3 oz tomatoes, 1 T chives, 1 T dressing. I count that as 1 serving but maybe it is 2? I am now eating more vegtables daily than I did before in a week or more. So I am happy with this goal and will chose the vegies if I ever got hungry between meals which I don't so kinda hard to when are to eat until you are full but still trying to up your food.
http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...6&page=9&pp=10 page 8 and 9 here show my last 2 days menu. I am still struggling with getting my calories up and now am also working on getting fat lower. Very tough job and time consuming. I actually search for higher calorie recipes...kinda of funny in a way when you think of it.

              Any answers to these questions:
Do I have to stay here and try every veg I might eat in the future?? Or is it okay to just up the carbs with whatever vegie I am currently eating.

Do I have to spend the same amount of time at each rung?

Thanks for your time and patience!

You get the calories up by adding fat or protein. Let's say your BMR is 1000 calories. About 30% of those calories must come from protein, so 300 calories are from protein which is roughly 75 grams of protein. So figure out your BMR and see how much protein you should be eating daily. You're probably eating less. Remember, the percentage of protein you eat does not change during Atkins.

How long you decide to stay on the rungs depends on you. I eat a wide variety of fruit and veggies, because I like them. So during those rungs, I stayed on them longer to try out those veggies and fruits. Granted once you progress to another rung and you find that you want to try Chinese broccoli, you can---just take it slowly and watch for any signs of blood sugar instability. Some rungs I didn't stay on very long--maybe a week at most because I really don't have a desire to eat certain things. For example, on the starchy veggie rung, I tried out carrots and potatoes. I skipped the alcohol rung because the most I use alcohol is in cooking and even then the amount of alcohol per serving of the dish amounts to a couple of tablespoons.

                  Re: New to OWL

OH NO! More math!!! Okay...so I despite eggs for breakfast and protein at lunch and dinner I have only been getting enough proteins about half the time I have been doing this (1 month). I need more details on how to do it. I have a BMR of 1711 which would mean I need 570 cal in protein. What number do I divide that by?? 4??

BMR divided by .30= X calories divided by Y = number of grams of protein need daily.

                  Right?? What is Y?

This may explain my problems in getting my fat % to go under 70% when I am not really adding extra to anything. Houston, we may have found the problem...LOL!

                    Re: New to OWL

30% of 1171 is 513.3 So you need about 514 (rounding up ) protein calories. Divide that by 4 to get the number of protein grams = 128 grams protein.

I'm sure when 2Big stops by, she'll give you a formula to figure out your protein more accurately. But this gives you a rough estimate of how you should be balancing your meals.

                      Okay...Thanks!

In the past month I have had 3 days over 130g, 2 days in the 120g, 3 days between 100-119 and the rest have been between 67-95...mostly 70's. YIKES! Shame on me!!

But I am sure that will help bring my fat down. No wonder. I couldn't believe it when I was reading add butter to your vegies...add fat ...add fat...I was already over with out adding extra. Have even managed to go from 3-4 T dressing on salad (before Atkins) down to one and be okay with it.

I thought it very funny that me and my diet buddy(SIL doing WW) were struggling with some of the same things...lowering fat and trying to up calories and vegies.

                      Thanks!
