  • skipping rungs???

This week I am supposed to be starting the nut rung. Here is the deal..I don't usually eat nuts. I don't really snack either. My plan for nuts is to have a couple of serving sizes bagged up and in the van for emergency times along with the hotrods/slimjims that are already in there. These would be used less than once a week and more likely less than once every two weeks (have used the hotrods only twice in 5 1/2 weeks).

Go straight to the berry rung? Even though I usually only eat these in the summer will be nice to have now and then through out the year.

So can I skip this rung?

Can I skip the alcohol rung? I usually only drink at...sometimes Christmas and 1 4 day long weekend a year where 5 of us gals get together with no men or kids and drink and eat and scrapbook (not sure how I am going to handle this as lots of shooters are involved).

Skip the beans rung..hmmm...no may stop here and try tofu...supposed to be good for you. Can't see it being a big part of the diet though.

Do the fruit, startch, and whole grain rungs.

    Opinions please. Thanks!!

This is basically the same as what I'm doing. In the beans rung I only eat kidney beans in my chili. I have only had that a couple of times. I am also not going to the whole grains rung until I am about 20 pounds from goal.

I hear you..the grain rung is a bit scary. I think that is one that has to be watched particularly close as it could be so easy to go overboard there without realizing it.

I just posted to another thread about flax. I had been thinking of adding it to my day for added fiber (needed) and was not aware that it may be considered a nut(?) and needs to be counted as part of ones carbs...so waiting on an answer for that. So if it does that is what I would be adding for my week...LOL.

Weigh to go on losing 49 pounds!! Practically 1/2 way to goal! Bet you can smell Onederland! Can't wait to go there myself!

Hey Elsie, I responded to your flax question in the other thread, but yah - the nuts/seeds rung is definitely where you'd be trying out the flax! I've made flax muffins, flax buns, flax crusts, flax pancakes, I've sprinkled it in salads, made a 'cereal' with it... the possibilities seem endless!

Just don't mess up where I did and forget that its a seed that needs to be counted towards your 5g of nuts/seeds!

I personally haven't used flax. Hopefully someone else can answer that one for you.

            Thanks Momtofour.

Hey rybread....I can see how easily it would be to go over on the flax. According to fitday .16 cup (which I thought was equal to 1 T) flax seeds gives you 116 cal, 8g fat, 9g carbs, 4g Protein. OR 1 T of Seeds, Flax seed gives you 59 cal, 4g fat, 4g carbs, 2g Protein.

So I must either be wrong about 16 T = a cup and it must actually be 32 T a cup or something is messed up in fitday. But it either could explain a carb/calorie creep if you were using it lots without counting it.

              But what's the fibre count?

My flax muffins, for example, are 6g carbs each, but with 4g fibre.

.16 cup flax seed is 9 carb and 4 fiber
1 T of Seeds, flax seed is 4g carb and 3 fiber
                according to fitday

Sal...it takes 16 T to 1 cup so wouldn't that make it .16 of a cup?..Okay DH showed me the math on this so you are right and I need to go back and fix 6 weeks of menus on fitday! I should have known that was too easy to figure out to be right.

Susan33...I did a serch for induction cookies but couldn't find it. Care to share the recipe. I used flax seed on my salad last night. And I would like to use it for the same reason as you...LOL!

                        Re: skipping rungs???

As an aside, if you do decide to skip a rung, don't jump right to the next rung. Stick with the one you're at a little while longer. You're trying to progress very slowly up that glycemic scale. Cutting to the proverbial rung chase might do more harm than good in the end.

So, while it is fine to skip a rung, don't immediately move up to the next rung. Stay where you are for a little while longer. Enjoy yourself. Then move on.

Thanks Cleo..in that case maybe I should find SOMETHING to try on each rung.

Elsie-- I would. I mean, you just found flax! You've enjoyed it, or maybe it has disagreed with you. These rungs are an excellent way to test a rotating diet and see what does and doesn't zip your zap on the OWL rungs.

If, however, the thought of nut rung makes you really unhappy (just as an example), stay at the rung a little longer you're on instead of hopping up the next rung, and save nuts for a different time. It's not a race during OWL, so there's no rush going up the ladder.

Besides, I'm scared of heights. :^)
