  • Owl Question

If I am moving up to rung 2 Dairy and I am already eating 3-4 oz of cheese a day now, I can still add any of the following 5 net carbs dairy items listed even if it is hard cheese? Also, can I have yogurt or milk in this rung?

    Dairy
3/5 cup or 5 slices Hard cheese (Cheddar, Provolone, Swiss, Mozzarella etc.)
    2 cups Goat cheese (Crumbled)
1 cup Fresh cheese (Cottage, Farmer’s, Pots)
    1/2 cup Ricotta
    4/5 cup Cream cheese
    3/4 cup Heavy cream (Fluid)
4 1/2 oz Light cream (Fluid)
    3 3/4 oz Half-and-Half (Fluid)
1 1/2 cup Heavy cream (Whipped, Unsweetened)
1 1/3 cup Light cream (Whipped, Unsweetened)
2/3 cup Cream (Whipped, pressurized container)
    1/2 cup Sour cream
I will stay on my diet. I will get healthy and lose weight. There is nothing I could eat or drink that tastes as good as how I feel at this moment on this WOE ~ nothing!

Milk has about 11 to 13 carbs per 8 fluid ounces. So that's quite a bit of carbs for 1 cup. And milk lovers might not be satisfied drinking only 4 fluid ounces of milk. Some people like the low carb dairy beverage and use that.

As for yogurt, it is allowed, but remember you only add 5 net carbs of that stuff.

The one caution about the dairy rung is that you really, really, really have to be aware of your calories. Dairy products are generally high fat (remember we don't use the reduced fat things because to reduce fat, they add in carbs). So if you eat 5 net carbs of cottage cheese, you might want to eat only 2 or 3 ounces of the hard cheeses. Be really cautious about heavy cream and sour cream because these foods are calorie dense, so if you use them in OWL quantities, you might want to cut back on something high fat.

While the metabolic advantage of Atkins allows us to eat slightly more calories and still lose weight, if you really overdo the calories the metabolic advantage won't help you lose weight at all.

        Re: Owl Question

First let me say that I didn't clue in that you could have milk during the dairy rung. I think I have trouble thinking outside the list. I have been using cream. So I can switch over to milk? I would like to just to save on the fat and use fat elsewhere in my day. Also will be cheaper for me as the cream usually ends up going bad before I can use it all and I always have milk for the kids.

That being said please be aware that as you climb the rungs you are to add only 5g carbs per week and if you choose to add milk it should be no more than 4 oz as whole milk and 2% have 6g carb in 4 oz.

I definitely opted to add the yogurt! According to this study, 8 ounces of yogurt only technically contains 4 carbs. It's something to consider anyway. Thanks, allie, for the link!

Yeah....I wish they sold Blue Bunny here! I have heard it is really good. Can I add any kind of yogurt? Even fruit ones since I am on that rung? As long as I keep it to 1/2 cup?

Stick to whole-fat, plain yogurt and add your own berries or splenda or flax. I eat Brown Cow Brand, but Dannon also makes a full-fat plain yogurt that I hear is very good.

Astro plain Balkan Style yogourt is great. It's 7g carb for 125g. I measure 100g and figure it's close to 5g carbs. Throw in 1/4 cup of blueberries and a wee bit of Splenda and it's actually quite a big serving.

                  Re: Owl Question

The fruit flavored yogurts usually have tons of added sugar. So I would stay use the plain yogurt and flavor it yourself.

Polaner makes a Splenda sweetened jam with about 5 net carbs per tablespoon. I think they taste horrid on their own, but when mixed into something, they aren't that bad.

Not2late..Yeah..I thought about the sugar part as I was lying in bed last night. I will try to eat plain...flavored at home stuff.

Isabeau...Astro sounds familiar so they may have that in my area. Will check it out. It actually says 7 carbs on the container?
