  • Climbing the OWL ladder is full of surprises

Just a quick comment. I had 1/2 of a tomato yesterday. I love tomatoes. Well, wouldn't you know it....that little itty bitty bit of tomato sent me into a severe craving (which that goodness I didn't give into). Funny, I used to eat them by the bushel. Now, I guess they are off my menu . Maybe that is why I loved them, because eating them caused me to want more and more of them.

A little tomato sauce does not cause cravings, but the fresh tomato does. Weird.

This experimentation with different foods and how it affects me as I am climbing the ladder is so interesting. I am finding my CCL is much higher than I thought it would be and love the variety of my food choices with OWL.

good for you not surrendering to the cravings.
fresh tomotoes have been bred to taste sweeter cause folk want them that way. sauce is made from different tomoto like those roma ones you see in the store.

if you can get heirloom seeds you can get old less sugar tomoatoes and grow your own.

You may be able later in your Atkins to have fresh tomatoes again.
    Happy OWLing

Don't you love OWL? It's great to see how different foods affect you. I can't eat anything that combines tomatoes and eggplant because it throws my appetite control out of whack. But I don't have that problem if I eat tomatoes or eggplant separately.

I love OWL, Megs. It is so much easier for me to maintain this lifestyle once I left the induction phase and started climbing the ladder.

I stopped doing Atkins from July until November, 2005 after losing 40 lbs the previous 12 months, because I was not giving myself enough variety in my food choices. Staying in extended induction was a Rx for failure for me. I restarted Atkins in November 2005. After re-induction, I moved onto OWL, and so far no "cheats" and my weight loss is still progressing at the same, slow steady pace as before.

The only thing is there are a few bombs out there....like the tomato incident above.

I know what you're talking about. I crave two things: sweets and tomatos. When I crave a tomato flavour I (and this is really weird) cook up some frozen greenbeans and cover them with some low-carb ketchup (or sometimes tomato sauce and cheese) and salt. It really does the trick and is quite filling!

Hi,killerbombshell, Thank you for the greenbean suggestion. I love green beans and ketchup, but must admit never put them together!

Re: Climbing the OWL ladder is full of surprises

Yup, OWL is "eating in the real" world. I did Induction for 4 months then I moved to OWL because I had to attend a 1 week symposium for my job. I knew from previous experience that it would be nearly impossible for me to eat strict Induction while there, so I moved up the ladder to Rung 1. Even by adding an additional 5 net carbs of veggies to my diet, it made that week alot easier.
