    Re: dietician appointment

Thanks so much guys. dessertthorn, thats what I envisioned, this woman was goign to berate me for eating butter and olive oil lol.

2Big... she didnt have anything to suggest for my cholesterol. Right now Im taking Fish Oil, Flax seed oil, vit E,Bcomplex and C. She did say she wouldnt want to know what my cholesterol would be like if I WASNT taking the Fish and Flax Seed. She was pretty peeved at my derm though... his standing orders are NOT for seperating out the HDL, LDL and VLDL. just for triglycerides and cholesterol (with everything else). So her point was that it could be that my HDL is very very high and the LDL is just moderate. Her one suggestion to me was to make Bozo change the standing orders for the breakdown so that we get the HDL, LDL instead of just assuming that the LDL is what is so blessed high.

I'm so happy to hear your appointment went well.

I bet she was surprized you eat "all those vegetables" because most people (even those on the low fat diets) don't eat more than 3 servings of veggies a day----and their veggies are usually starchy ones like potatoes!

Good for you! And good for her for not being so quick to judge this WOE based on the misinformation of the media!

            Excellent!

And that is so true about the HDL/LDL, my HDL is very very high and my LDL is extremely low, my doctor was shocked - she pretty much said "it don't get no better than that!" so that could very well be the case for you as well!

What condition is the medication the dermatologist has prescribed for? And what is the medication called?

There may be some alternative medication, even a natural therapy, that might help. Even if a natural one only helped you reduce the dose of this medication that may help your cholesterol count.

2big, if he balks, I will beat him with my shoe! I was PEEVED when the nutritionist said that he hadnt ordered any breakdowns and that he was going by total triglyceride level!hes put me through He-double hockey sticks and he didnt have the LDL levels! Hes in for an earfull. I get stabbed again next weekend, he gets a butt chewing on the 15th lol. He WILL give me new standing orders that include a breakout of HDL, LDL and VLDL EVERY time I get stabbed or we will have a serious discussion. Insurance doesnt pay for that much whenit comes to labwork and for him to dink around when it comes to MY $$... its going to hit the fan.

Hi Odille. Im taking Accutane (isotrentonin sp??). I have minor cycstic acne (which I didnt get till I was in my 20s! argh!) and nothing else prescription wise has helped so this was basically the last option for me to take in hopes of it dissapearing. Its working wonderfully for me thus far and I am quite happy with it. Ive tried everything pill wise and topical wise. Ive got very sensitive skin to begin with so many topicals are far too harsh and cause more harm then good.

one good thing about doing Atkins while taking that is the drug ups triglycerides and Atkins uses tryglycerides as fuel so you should be burning them up and keepong the level lower then if you weren't doing Atkins.

My 23 yr old son takes Accutane, that is some powerful stuff, but it really works well on the cycstic acne when nothing else will, doesn't it? I can't belive how beautiful my son looks now! He has never had his cholesterol checked, his dermotologist has never said he has to, thanks for the heads-up, I'm going to find out about this!

I'm glad your appointment with the nutritionist went well, when I first read your post, I had a feeling it would, most of them are getting up to speed on the fact that low carb if followed correctly really is the way to go for people with high cholesterol, it fixed mine!

I have heard some really nasty stuff about Accutane - have you checked out what it does to your liver and other organs? As I remember, it is not meant to be used long term also. It's sad when nothing else clears it up. Has he/she tried anything homeopathic? I know alot of times they say that it is really an internal issue and if the diet is repaired, the acne gets better. Maybe your kids need Atkins too!

                          Re: dietician appointment

Hey Chriss! I find it odd that your son isnt having to take any blood tests. They check for liver function, cholesterol, triglycerides etc etc. Since it can impare the liver thats their main concern. (that and what I feel is the overblown theory on it causing depression. BULL- the acne causes depression not theblessed meds!) Is he having to do IPledge? (its mainly for us gals-pregnancy yaknow- but I believe it is for the guys as well).

Hi Carol. Accutane can cause liver problems (heck so can tylenol!) and they domonitor it very carefully (least they should be). I get blood drawn every 3 weeks and started with teh blood draws a month before I started the meds and will have to have them for at least a month after tomake sure things are alright. Its definitly not something most people go into blindly or without a lot of thought. Cystic acne can be horribly painful if its severe (mine is mild). Many times patients go through the gamet of diet, prescriptions, natural stuff etc and this is the last resort.

Chriss, Im THRILLED the nutritionist was so excepting and so willing to ask questions. It made me feel incredible when she said that she felt I was doing alright with Diet/Atkins. Really verified the whole thing for me!

Oh! He is having his blood tested! I just thought it was for liver function, I didn't realize they tested for cholesterol and all that other stuff too! Live and learn, he must be doing ok on it. Actually, the last time he went, the doctor was talking about weaning him off of it because he seems to be cleared up and he wants to see if he has gotten better.
