  • Question about OWL and weightloss

I have been considering when to move to owl.
My weight loss so far on induction:
    Week 1 - 5.4 lbs
    Week 2 - 2.4 lbs
    Week 3 - 0.2 lbs
    Week 4 - 1.8 lbs
    Week 5 - 0.8 lbs
    Total = 10.6 lbs
I have been pretty good about staying on strict induction rules (other than the second week before I had the 2002 edition and maybe had a little too much cheese and cream). I still have 27.2 lbs to lose.

When you moved to owl did you see a significant decline in weightloss? Especially if you were averaging one lb a week?

    Hope this makes sense.

Re: Question about OWL and weightloss

we have a few folk who actully lost faster in OWLthen they had in extended induction.
your rate of OWL loss will depend on your mrtabolism and your activitiy level. As Dr Atkins says it is the ratio of Fats to carbs that effects weight loss on his plan and the higher your CCLL the more carbs you can consumebefore seeing your weight lose slow drastically.

remember too as we lose weight our bodied need less fuel to do the exact same activites so we either need to increase our activites to burn more fuel or consume less.
Also as we lose each individual pound will represent a larger percet of the amount of fat we have to lose. a 1 pound loss for some body with 100 pounds to lose is the same as a .1 pound loss for somebody with 10 pounds to lose.

Lay a strong foundation for your Atkins house of eating in induction but build the framing tosupport the roof in OWL there are many timbers (FOODS) to test and learn about as far as your needs go. Spend some quality time in OWL so you can be the one out of 10 losers who's house doesn't come crashing down when you get to goal weight and move in.
    Happy OWLing.

Hi Losing. Ill give you my weekly weights so you can see how Ive done on OWL.
      1/9 234.0

      1/23 228.0 (up 0.5)
      1/30 226.0 (down 2.0)

Its still possible to lose in OWL, obviously. For me, it appears to be more steady.

Re: Question about OWL and weightloss

        Thanks for the responses.
I think I am going to stick with induction for two more full weeks (starting Sunday) and make sure that during the two full weeks my carb count is 20. I actually quite often do not hit the 20 mark. Then, after those two weeks, start OWL rung 1. This way, I do not go from 10-15 to 25. I want to make sure I do it right. I am also going to try to read it all again (both the book and all the stickies, so I am sure of what I am doing... like that will happen...)

Re: Question about OWL and weightloss

I think you misunderstood OWL you add only 5 net carbs to whatever your induction count was. Please don't add carby foods to your induction just to get to 20 net. That was the upper limit not the assigned eating number. the majority of your carbs have to come from your induction 3 cups of veggies so if you want to go loner induction fine but don't toss in carbs just to do so. remeber ity is the ratio of carbs to fats that controls the weight loss on Atkins.

Re: Question about OWL and weightloss

As 2big suggested you can start OWL by adding 5 net carbs extra on top of you average induction amount - so if you usually ate at 15 carbs you can eat 20 carbs on the first OWL 'rung'.

If it were me I would move on now so you can get the benefit of eating more veggies! Many of us did more than one addition of 5 net carbs on that rung so we could experiment to make sure none of the induction-legal veggies that we hadnt already eaten on induction affected us adversely.

BTW there is a good sticky on how to add the extra foods on rung one here
            http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=5108.
If you are introducing a new-to-you veg only add it on 3 days out of the first week, using extra servings of the veggies you already have been eating on alternate days.

            Hope this helped
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Question about OWL and weightloss

That's right, add the 5g's to your induction numbers. For example, I averaged 16 net carbs during induction so when I moved to OWL, I was looking at 21 net carbs for the veggie rung. I stayed on induction for about six months. I continued to lose at the same rate when I moved to OWL which was about half a pound a week.

Re: Question about OWL and weightloss

I was on Atkins before and I stayed on Extended Induction for 8 months! I lost 52 pounds, then, one day, I lost my mind and started eating everything in sight. I gained back all but 13 pounds before I caught hold of myself and got back on Atkins again. I was the poster child for extended induction, I never cheated, not once. I wish that I had listened to the people on this site when they urged me to move on to OWL. If you look around these boards, you will notice that the people that have been truely successful with this WOL are the ones that have read the book and followed Dr. Atkins advice to the letter. Induction, OWL, pre-maintence and maintence in that order. So I am urging you, move to OWL, you aren't meant to stay on induction, it is too strict, you need to slowly add the foods that bring variety and pleasure to your meals, you need to learn to eat correctly and the weight loss will follow.

Re: Question about OWL and weightloss

Sorry, I am just reading the remainder of the posts. Thanks for all of the information.
Actually, my problem is that I have not been consistent with the amount of carbs. Some days it would be two cups salad at lunch and a cup of vegetables at dinner, then next day it might have been two cups salad and that is it. Sometimes, one cup green beans, but no salad. What I wanted to do this next two weeks was to stay consistent. That is, eat 2 cups salad at lunch and a cup of vegetables (brocolli, beans, spaghetti squash...) for dinner. So therefore, I would know where my carb count is.
I guess in a way, I am increasing my carb count, but just not everyday (since somedays I was already there anyway).
                  Make sense?...
I have been testing new things too, like olives.
Thanks again. I am planning on re-reading the section in the book. Also, I have actually read the link (and printed it out). It is very helpful.

Re: Question about OWL and weightloss

just remember if you decide you want more jump to the OWL rung one and add more. better to fluctate with youor veggie carb numbers then jump off plan with some high carb foods cause you wanted something.

                    Happy low carbing.
