Found a peeeeeeeeeeeeeeanut in my shoe.

Anyway.... I moved up to Nuts last week because Im travelling this week and it is FAR easier to travel in hot weather on planes with nuts then veggies. So.... I had peanuts last week and did alright. Every few days, I gave them a try. no problem. Then.... I flew on Monday. On the third plane.... I got to feeling a little motion sick (NOT at all like me.) Had the peanuts about an hour before. Yesterday I had peanuts for a snack while everyone else in my seminar was eating carbs or fruit (and I didnt even Drool over the sugary treats once!). Felt a lil blechy about an hour later. Today had peanuts midmorning while everyone else was enjoying their carbs and fruit. Not 20 minutes later I was doing the 'gotta go shuffle' to the potty. Obviously Im cutting out the peanuts. I called my mom to see if she ever remembered me being sensitive to peanuts as a kid. Nope. I never ate them that much to begin with. no peanut butter either.

So... since it appears Im sensitive to peanuts when in quantity...... Should I be sensitive to other nuts? I grabbed some macadamias tonight for tomarrow to try out. Should I leave peanuts alone completely or since it appears to be a quantity issue have them in SMALL amounts?

    Many thanks!

Where'd you get the peanuts? I remember as a kid having this super huper crazy reaction everytime I had them and it turned out it was the MSG in them as a preservative. It isn;t used much anymore, but you never know.

Thanks for that idea DotSamantha. Just peanuts and salt on the ingredients list. Interesting that they would put msg in peanuts! Im going to try the macadamias today and see how those pan out for me. All else fails I'll skip the nuts totally and hit sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds instead.

Re: Found a peanut found a peanut

Technically peanuts are a legume. My dad was deadly allergic to all nuts except peanuts, which he ate every day. I don't remember anyone having peanut allergies when I was growing up but now it's all you hear about. I heard something about the type of soil they are being grown in or they type of crops they are grown with....something like that, has made them cause reactions in people and it's only been in the last 20 years or so that it's become an issue. I'd go ahead and try the other nuts. I have no problems with nuts of any kind, despite the allergies in my family history.

Re: Found a peanut found a peanut

Welcome to my world Tired! There are some perfectly legal foods I cannot eat daily, but can eat once or twice or three times weekly without any problem at all. Almonds and cashews are two foods that do it to me.

Put peanuts on your "okay to eat a couple times a week" list. So you might not have to avoid them completely, but you know that you need to be careful when you eat them.

You can definitely try out different nuts and seeds. As Lady said, peanuts are technically a legume and are different than tree nuts (walnuts, almonds, pecans) and seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, squash, sesame). Just try them out, one at a time, and see how they affect you.

Whenever I have peanuts I feel really strange afterwards as well. Infact going to the bathroom is no longer a normal every day task it's a painful one!

I'm thinking peanuts equal bad for me and you!

Re: Found a peanut found a peanut

if all your peanuts came from the same container you could have a contaminant in there too.

keep written records of your OWl experiences so you can see if it is the food or the group of foods that effect you.

                Thanks folks!

The macadamia nuts didnt bother me so thats a plus. (mmmmm macadamias!!!). Bought some almonds this weekend when I got home and those haventbothered me yet either. (although I do need to buy individual packets instead of mass quantity containers)

2Big, thanks for the reminder to write it down!

Re: Found a peanut found a peanut

I pre-weigh my nuts and store them in individual baggies or containers--makes it less tempting to keep reaching into the can to get more.
