  • Chocolate?

Hey guys... I was just wondering what rung of OWL Chocolate would be on? Not sweetened crap that you buy in chocolate chip or candy bar form, baker's chocolate (that I've heard is actually good for you in small amounts) that you can melt and add splenda to to use as a cheesecake or berry topping. One small serving of my baker's chocolate is 4 carbs, 2 of them fiber... not too shabby for something that's yummy with just a bit of splenda.

I know that the key ingredient for chocolate comes from the cacao tree... what I'm not sure is if I should consider cacao "beans" as legumes or nuts/seeds, because I've heard people go both ways.

So what do we think unsweetened baker's chocolate is? Other than delicious and easy to work with.

It's a seed of a tree. So it can go in the Nuts/Seed rung.

      Re: Chocolate?

interesting. Ive been on this rung for awhile now and not once tried to think about letting chocolate in. Now that I know I can have it, I might have to try making the ice cream recipe with bakers chocolate. hmmmmm

Just be aware that unsweetened chocolate is unsweetened. Therefore you'll need to add some type of sweetener to it to make it edible. The sweetener limits on Atkins never changes from Phase to Phase: it's a limit of 3 servings daily.

I've been adding one packet of spenda with some butter to my baker's chocolate. It's pretty good and kills any cravings I get around TOM.

Yeah, that's exactly what I like it for, TOM! I make a small serving of sweetned baker's chocolate (melt and stir!) and then I dip it into a small serving of strawberries... seriously kicks my PMS cravings out the window. I feel like a queen when I do that.

Nuts/seed? Awesome! I haven't experimented much with legumes yet, so I was concerned that I had blown it.

              Re: Chocolate?

actually you can do chocolate home made in a small amount all the way back in induction as Dr Atkins lists cocoa powder as a spice and bakers chocolate is just cocoapowder and fat.
word of warning if choclate was a bad food for you to control before Atkins do yourself a favor and as Dr Atkins warns us in the premaintnenance chapter don't even allow that food abck in your Atkins life. no point in setting yourself up for a pig out as I discovered with Megs choclate/cream mix.

The good for you chemicals in chocolate are in the darkchoclate so if youa re going for health makesure you get dark.

lol... I didn't like chocolate before Atkins. It's too sweet!

But the way I do dark baker's chocolate with very little Splenda is perfect for me.

Sorry about those munchies, Pineapple... I said the dread "c" word.

Are you kidding? I had never even considered chocolate as a remote possibility before today! I'm speechless. 'Bye!

                      *sprints for the door*

Just kidding (kinda). I am going to wait until I'm on the fruit and berries rung before I let myself even consider chocolate as a feasable option. But what a wonderful revelation. I am truly in blissful shock. What a fantastic way of life!!!

Thank you for the post... thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you......

                          Re: Chocolate?

Lindt Excellence 70% Chocolate is about 30% carbohydrate, but I eat it in small quantities and it doesn't take me over my carb limit.

Some folk can handle the taste of Lindt 85% - I still find that too bitter.

The temperature of the chocholate in the mouth is critical. I sometimes have it while drinking green tea. If it's cold I zap the sqare of chocolate in the microwave on full pwer for 10 seconds or so.

Those in the early stages of Atkins should be very cautious about this.

                          Any comments, 2big?
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
                          he said, 'Don't count calories.'
