  • Spaghetti Squash

Hi I bought some Spaghetti Squash yesterday and when I went to Fitday to enter it in it seems to have a pretty high carb count so I'm not sure how much to eat. I was going to eat half of one to get my 5 extra net carbs but I don't want to overdue it with my carbs.

I had the same problem. I think fitday is way off on the spaghetti squash

    Well, this site says 10 carbs - 2 fiber = 8 for 1 cup
    http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-B00001-01c20lS.html

    And this say 7 carbs - 1 fiber = 6 for 1 cup

Oh wait. Your fitday says for 2 cups. And it's not deducting fiber. So I guess it's not too far off.

So if I ate half of one for lunch or dinner would I be ok as far as my carbs? I absolutely love the stuff and would eat it all day if I could but I don't want to go overboard.

I have the same problem, it is just too good. A veggie I could definitely overcarb over. Think the site that I looked at said 8 net carbs per cup also.
But who can stay at a cup?

That's impossible to know if you did not measure the "half" before you ate it.

One of the catches about Atkins and about OWL Phase is that you should measure the foods in order to be as accurate as possible. If you don't have standard cooking measuring utensils (measuring cups and measuring spoons), you can get them at any store that has cooking utensils for less than $10.00

According to the USDA website, 1 cup of baked spaghetti squash has 10 total carbs, 2.2 fiber grams, for a net carb of 7.8. Therefore 3/4 cup would be around 5 net carbs.

Again, you need to measure your foods. Guessing the amounts on OWL can get you into trouble.

I know this sounds stupid, but does anyone have a picture? I have never seen spaghetti squash and am curious.

Yikes! 3/4 of a cup eh? I haven't eaten any yet but I'll be sure to measure it out everytime I eat it. Now I know that in the book is says I can have 1 cup of it as long as I haven't gone over 2 cups for for salad veggies but since I can have 5 extra carbs can I have 2 3/4 cups servings with my dinner?

At this point, I wouldn't use a "new" vegetable as 1 cup Induction limit PLUS the OWL 5 net carb. At least, I wouldn't use it like that until I am sure how 5 net carbs of that "new vegetable" affects me.

For example, let's say I've never ate Brussel Sprouts during Induction. During OWL, I want to try them out. I would only eat 5 net carbs of it three times a week along with my dailly 3 cups of the Induction veggies to see how those Brussel Sprouts affect me. If they don't affect me, then I could experiment by adding the 1 cup plus 5 net carbs to see what happens.

mwalsh, here's a good link about it.

                        Re: Spaghetti Squash

I love spaghetti squash. I toss it with grilled chicken cut up into nice size pieces, a little broccoli for color, parmesan cheese, butter and cream.... The whole family enjoys it - which is good, because I'd go overboard!

                        It really is a treat!

Btw, I've been boiling it all this time in chicken broth. I think I'll give baking a try and see how that goes. Thanks

                            Re: Spaghetti Squash

Yeah, I find that if I eat spaghetti squash I have to add a nice, creamy sauce (like homemade alfredo) and plenty of protein so that I don't just pig out on the "noodles" (due to the high-ish carb count and all)... so I'll add something like grilled chicken, ground pork, chorizo, or shrimp to it. Anything I've got for meat that I think will complement it. 3/4 cup can be plenty if you fill up on fats and protein with it.
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

That is a good idea, I more or less made it my main dish so I probably ate more than if I had gravy or sauce over it. Because I like it so much with just butter and cinnamon I am thinking maybe I will eat it only as a dessert.
