            Re: The 6 hour rule

Some of the Induction Rules do not change from Induction through Maintenance Phase. Some are slightly altered to fit your particular phase of Atkins.

Rules of Induction (with modifications for OWL/Pre-Maintenance/Maintenance)

            1. Eat either three regular-size meals a day or four or five smaller meals. Do not skip meals or go more than six waking hours without eating. Does not change during OWL, Pre-Maintenance, Maintenance.

            2. Eat liberally of combinations of fat and protein in the form of poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs and red meat, as well as pure, natural fat in the form of butter, mayonnaise, olive oil, safflower, sunflower and other vegetable oils (preferably expeller-pressed or cold-pressed). Does not change during OWL, Pre-Maintenance, Maintenance.

            3. Eat no more than 20 grams a day of carbohydrate, most of which must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables. You can eat approximately three loosely packed cups of salad, or two cups of salad plus one cup of other vegetables (see Acceptable Foods). For OWL/ Pre-Maintenance/ Maintenance, your daily carbs is based on your individual carb tolerance level (CCLL or CCML or ACE). But carbs from low glycemic vegetables, fruits, legumes and grains (relatively speaking) comprise the majority of your carbs.

            4. Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter. Do not eat nuts or seeds in the first two weeks. Foods that combine protein and carbohydrates, such as chickpeas, kidney beans and other legumes, are not permitted at this time.
For OWL/Pre-Maintenance/Maintenance, eating these non-Induction friendly foods depends on your body's individual tolerance of these foods. Just because a food is "legal" doesn't mean your body will tolerate it.

            5. Eat nothing that isn't on the Acceptable Foods list. And that means absolutely nothing. Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins. For OWL and Pre-Maintenance phases, acceptability depends on two factors: your current place on the carbohydrate ladder and your body's individual tolerance of that food. You develop your own "Acceptable Foods list" during these two phases. Again, just because a food is "legal", it doesn't mean your body will tolerate it. The Induction Foods list, however, remains your basic foods list for the other phases. That is, the 3 cups of Induction vegetables becomes the minimum amount of vegetables you will eat throughout your Atkins lifestyle. Natural fats are your fat sources. Animal and vegetable proteins are your protein sources.

            6. Adjust the quantity you eat to suit your appetite, especially as it decreases. When you're hungry, eat the amount that makes you feel satisfied, but not stuffed. When you're not hungry, eat a small controlled carbohydrate snack to accompany your nutritional supplements. Does not change during OWL/Pre-Maintenance/Maintenance.

            7. Don't assume any food is low in carbohydrate instead, read labels. Check the carb count (it's on every package) or use a carbohydrate gram counter. Does not change during OWL/Pre-Maintenance/Maintenance.

            8. Eat out as often as you wish but be on guard for hidden carbs in gravies, sauces and dressings. Gravy is often made with flour or cornstarch, and sugar is sometimes an ingredient in salad dressing. Does not change during OWL, Pre-Maintenance, Maintenance.

9.Avoid foods or drinks sweetened with aspartame. Instead, use sucralose or saccharin. Be sure to count each packet of any of these as 1 gram of carbs. ***Does not change during OWL, Pre-Maintenance, Maintenance***. Elleth (a former mod and admin) and I both looked through DANDR and could not find any mention that the sweetener limits increase as you progress through the diet.

            10. Avoid coffee, tea and soft drinks that contain caffeine. Excessive caffeine has been shown to cause low blood sugar, which can make you crave sugar. Does not change during OWL, Pre-Maintenance, Maintenance.

            11. Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day to hydrate your body, avoid constipation and flush out the by-products of burning fat. Does not change during OWL, Pre-Maintenance, Maintenance.

12.If you are constipated, mix a tablespoon or more of psyllium husks in a cup or more of water and drink daily. Or mix ground flaxseed into a shake or sprinkle wheat bran on a salad or vegetables. Does not change during OWL, Pre-Maintenance, Maintenance however, some with the amount of high fiber carbs eaten during these phases, constipation is seldom a problem.

13.At a minimum, take a good daily multivitamin with minerals, including potassium, magnesium and calcium, but without iron. Does not change during OWL, Pre-Maintenance, Maintenance, however, you might need to adjust these supplements based upon the nutrients you receive from your foods.

            Extra Cautions:

Stay away from diet products unless they specifically state "no carbohydrates." Most such foods are for low-fat diets, not controlled carbohydrate plans. Does not change during OWL, Pre-Maintenance, Maintenance
The words sugarless, sugar-free or "no sugar added" are not sufficient. The label must state the carbohydrate content; that's what you must go by.
Many products you do not normally think of as foods, such as chewing gum, breath mints, cough syrups and cough drops, are filled with sugar or other caloric sweeteners. They must be avoided. Does not change during OWL, Pre-Maintenance, Maintenance
Be wary of prepared salads at salad bars or deli counters. For example, cole slaw or even tuna-fish salad may have been prepared with sugar. Does not change during OWL, Pre-Maintenance, Maintenance
The other thing that doesn't change is your exercise regimen. Exercise is mandatory during Induction and mandatory throughout OWL, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance phases.

maybe if you would restate in your words what you understand to be what folk are telling you in their replies we would know if you are getting it. For example you misunderstood the 6 hr upper limit of waitnig to eat cause we aren't hungry to be a minimun time limit to wait to eat. Somehow you misunderstood the eatting to satisfy hunger and stopping when you were over eatting your Atkins back when you had 4 cups of lettuce with each of your ceasar salads cause you loved those salads to be not eatting when hungry cause you could stand the hunger. if you had posted that in your reply to the answers we would have known you didn't understand it and explained it better until you did.

Since the kids will not let you have quiet reading time read your DANDR out loud to them. When they express their dislike for your book choice let them read their own book quietly or look at the pictures in their book and you will read yours with a timer and then y'all can share reading. that way you get DANDR read and they enjoy reading time too building a very important habit for later in life.

SUCH a great idea 2Big. I love your thinking. That would drive my kid crazy, and then he would find something to do on his own
