  • I love dry-roasted peanuts

    And I'm proud.

Now, when I can move on to the nut and seed rung, am I allowed dry-roasted peanuts? If so how many? Please say lots...

they seem to have a very good net carb content (lots of fibre). Plus, I love them.

Dr Atkins told us that the OWL rung portions for most nuts should be 1 ounce (whatever the actual carb count is) so if you are going to count peanuts as nuts (I know some people do though they are really legumes) then according to my copy of DANDR that is approximately 26 peanuts.
The 'Power of 5' section in the OWL chapter (#14) lists quantities for lots of nuts btw.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

        Re: I love dry-roasted peanuts

I was getting dry roasted peanuts, but they were salted... I loved them.. I thought they were soooo good... and no wonder! I happen to glance at the ingredients and it occurred to me that the list was longer than just the peanuts and salt I expected to find... They dry roasted them with modified food starch and corn syrup... I was floored. So once again I was guilty of not reading the label... but they looked so innocent.... and ended up being so evil... (like a few dates I could name)
I was pleased with how many an oz ended up being... I would only eat about a half oz at a time... of course a different brand...

I too love dry roasted peanuts and have been eating them almost daily.
They make a great low carb snack, while making Atkins more endurable.
          Cheers for dry roast!!

            Your post reminds me....

I was at the supermarket yesterday morning and I saw a "buy one get one free" deal for roasted nuts. A jar of the almonds and walnuts were already in my cart, when I decided to look at their nutritional info and ingredients. Lo and behold---corn syrup solids, maltdextrin, etc. etc. I put them back on the shelf.

It's a pity isn't it, that they mess with food that much.

I KNOW!! Can't Dry roasted peanuts be JUST Dry Roasted Peanuts?? I mean, come on... I am looking forward to moving at the end of the month. We are moving back to our tiny little country town. There is an older farmer man who sells his produce in a stand and alos sells boiled peanuts all year long and will often boil corn in the shuck and sell it at 50 cents an ear. You have to watch the boiled peanuts, cause they are salty, but mmmmmmmmmmmm soooo gooood!

I'm from the South so I know about those yummy boiled peanuts. There's a farmer's market nearby and they have a boiled peanut stand. The woman who runs it is from Georgia and her boiled peanuts aren't as salty as others I've tasted. But, I only stop by the stand once a month---or else!

                  Re: I love dry-roasted peanuts

Mommaglass...Oh, how I miss boiled peanuts!! Hubby and I first lived in South Port, Fl (aka: PanamaCity, Florida) for two years. We'd make the trip up the road just for boiled peanuts. Yep, that was the life. lol. Salty? oh yeah!!! And they have to be freshly boiled, not stuck in a bag and sitting for an hour...lol. The fresher the better.

Okay, enough coveting boiled peanuts. lol.

Just a word of thought. Peanuts, are legumes (like Elizellen said). Best wishes on making your choices for nuts and congrats on getting that far on the OWL rung!

Panama City! The Redneck Riviera!! WoooHoooo!
I know. When my British girl friend came down to visit 2 years ago (she now lives in Conneticutt) I bought her a bag of boiled peanuts and she adored them, ate almost all of them on the plane home! Come to think of it, that would be a good way to tempt her into coming back down again... Boiled peanuts *drool*

I am not to the nut rung yet, but I, too, love peanuts! So, my question is what kind/brand should we buy?

If peanuts are your game, I'd check for those that are unsalted, unroasted, and just al la natural. I've found natural peanuts at the healthfood store, just ask for the ingredient list

I've yet to find dry roasted peanuts that don't have starches in them. all the ones here seem to have all sorts of potato starch, corn starch etc. I still with blanched or just plain roasted peanuts.

I buy roasted peanuts in their shells. I find it's better to shell them myself while I eat them because it's a pain in the rear end to shell the peanuts while eating, so I'm not tempted to eat more than the amount I remove.

I also try to buy nuts in the shells during the fall months for that reason----having to work for you food sort of prevents you from overeating because by the time you've shelled them, you're too tired to eat any more!

It shocks me sometimes with all the stuff they put corn syrup or starch in. I'd have never known it if the ADBB hadn't brought it to my attention.

Does anyone know why they put that stuff in most of the food products? Do they do that for the carb addiction? Sell more 'cause it has a sweeter taste?
