  • Frozen Berry Carb counts FITDAY??

    Hello everybody,

A quick question about FITDAY. Oddly I have noticed, more so since switching to level 4 berries, the carb counts on Fitday are starting to concern me.

For example. I have a bag of frozen blackberries. There is no sugar added, ingredients are just frozen blackberries.

The bag states serving size 1 cup. 12 grams of carbs, 3 grams of fiber.
Fitday shows....1 Cup Frozen Blackberries...23.66 grams of carbs, 7.55 grams of dietary fiber....

The same thing goes for broccoli (frozen)....the bag states one thing and Fitday states 15.19 grams of carbs and 8.52 dietary fiber. That is also twice what is stated on the bag.

I don't want to switch back and forth, I've been doing so well, but I'm worried about this berry level, I mean a cup of blackberries for 16-17 carbs doesn't seem worth it, ya know?

Could someone please give some information on this.

    Confused and befuddled,

    Your buddy,

If I buy frozen veggies, I typically go by what's on the package. For fresh veggies, I go with the nutrient data bank info.

Berries have a number of carbs. But the trick with them and the other fruit and veg is to eat it in combination with other foods, rather than on their own or as the main ingredient in a dish. I eat berries as toppings on vegetable salads---those occasional bites of sweeteness compliment the general savoriness of the salad.

Is it bad if you ate them on their own. I played out last night. Woke up late this morning. No eggs in the fridge, basically no anything (tonight is grocery night....

So I grabbed a cup of blackberries....I thought that was okay!

      Yikes.....I'm not hungry...now just a little bewildered...

So....the berries are kind of just like the veggies, spread them out through all 3 meals? That seems kind of hard?

You always want to eat carb food in combo with fat and/or protein. The fat and protein helps to blunt the blood sugar response the carb food will trigger.

You don't have to spread the berries out during the day. Just make sure you eat them in combo with a fat and/or protein.

Alot of people think 1/2 cup strawberries or 1/4 cup raspberries are too small to be even worth eating. Not true! That amount with cheese or cream is a perfect dessert.

You can combine the berries with the rhubarb for a sweet-sour fruit sauce that goes great with chicken, turkey or pork. Heidi posted a recipe for a sweet omelette in the food chat forum. You can toss the berries in a blender, give it a whirl, add ice, whirl it again, pour it into a glass, add soda water and a tablespoon of heavy cream for a nice smoothie-type drink.

Try not to get stuck in the "berries and cream" or "berries for dessert" frame of mind, and that 1/2 or 1/4 cup will be enough for you.

Also, we have to remember: many of us are fat because we didn't exercise and we ate huge portions of food. We hopefully have our exercise in order now, so we have to work on eating "normal" portion sizes. Yeah, yeah, I know....before Atkins you were able to eat 2 cups of berries, a half a watermelon, etc. Well, newsflash, before Atkins you were overweight! So while the fat person in us tells us to eat 10 pounds of raspberries, we should realize that if we continue listening to the fat person, we'll be fat again!

Yeah, you're going to hear me push and pull you to be aware of your portion sizes in this OWL forum. One of the mistakes I commonly see is that we don't adjust our portion sizes and we stop losing weight---not because we're going over our carbs or not drinking our water or not exercising. So remember, you are a smaller person. You don't need to eat the same amount of food the bigger you needed to eat, unless your activity level is very high (like you're training for a marathon or something!)

Thank you so much! I appreciate all of your assistance big time.

Wow...that could have been a major train derailment!

I need to really read up again on this rung and your stickies too!

I copied everything printed it out, and haven't had a whole lot of time to read it. Looks like I need to.

Thank you again! I also think I'll use your suggestion for the frozen veggies and my fitday. That fitday program has been a life saver! I love using it.
It lets you know when you're close to being 'bad' haha!.

I see Not2late has already gotten you. Also use the given serving size on your package as a guide but you can go smaller.

You don't have to do it as a veggie you can use it with your cereal, flax hotcakes, or as some GROP for example. If you are going to cream them one trick I found to make the cream go further was to put my frozen berries in a baggie pour in the measured amount of cream and shake. the cream will coat the berries and freeze on the surface of your berry. then you have a wonderful low carb sugar free treat.

Dr Atkins in that little tips box at the end of chapter 14 says to always have your berries with a fat.
those berries are a great source of vits too and lots of fiber.
