  • Gained :(

I haven't posted with any questions in a while because I've been doing really good but I need some advice.

I was happy because last week the scale finally moved and I went from 238 to 236. I worked out last night and did some weight lifting with my legs, I think I did 6 sets of 10 reps. Lately it seems the day after I lift weights the scale goes down but today it went up to 237. I know I shouldn't make a huge deal about it or even weight myself on that stupid thing but I hadn't weighed in a week and wanted to see if the hard work I've done in the gym this past week had paid off. Instead I'm just more disappointed and want to go work harder.. I am going to be measured tonight so hopefully some inches have come off.

The only other thing I thought would have made me gain are the Avocados I've been eating. I eat one pretty much everyday with my grilled chicken breast. I usually add onions and tomatoes to my guacamole so maybe that is stalling me. Has anyone had a problem with Avocado's?

    Re: Gained

I just read that a 2 - 3 lb. weight fluctuation during the week is normal. I suggest weighing in the next couple of days this week and see if you get back to a loss. I had this problem this past week and finally saw a loss on a nontypical weigh-in day. Don't get discourage and keep doing your workouts. Good luck!

Kim, don't forget that working out builds muscle and that muscle is heavier than fat! That could be all it is, especially if you've just stepped up your exercise routine.

As far as the avacados go, I've heard that they stall a lot of people. Could you maybe cut it down to half of one a couple times a week? (I know, they're way good...but see if it makes a difference)

You're doing a great job, don't get discouraged!

        Re: Gained

You might not lose weight every day, every week, every hour. What you are looking for is a downward trend. So you weighed 236 last week. Today you weigh 237.

You need to eat 1500 additional calories in order to gain a pound. Did you do that?

Things like water retention can cause a gain in pounds. Is your TOM approaching? Did you weigh yourself after you drank water or before you relieve your bowels or bladder of their contents?

Look at the big picture and stop torturing yourself.

Also...someone on this board I believe said....muscles retain water in order to repair themselves.....so when you work out, essentially its like them tearing and then healing the next day...youre breaking them down to build them up....and they need fluid to repair themselves...that might be it as well.....

Right Seshena, that's exactly what is happening. When you work out with weights or with any new training program you tear down the muscles that's the soreness that you feel in your body. You creat small tears in your muscles and what does the body do it sends water to the sight to repair the tisses kinda like if ya sprain you ankle and it swells except with exercise and muscles you really don't see it you just know you are sore. It's very very common to gain weight even the first 4 weeks of any given program NO you are not gaining fat your body is holding onto the water cause you are breaking your muscle down and buiulding new muscle which is GREAT we want that. GET off that DAMN scale I can't tell you HOW horriblle and reched that thing is it will ruin your best efforts and when it comes to weight training you just can't use that as a guide. USe yout tape measure and take pictures.

              Re: Gained

I lost steady weight for my first 3-5 months on Atkins. Following that, as I moved into OWL, my weight began to fluctuate and stall here and there (where as I was losing inches here and there). I'm not sure if it was due to what I was eating or just the way that I lose weight.

Even nowadays, it's not uncommon for me to go up 1-2 lbs during a week or over several weeks. That just happened to me after 4-5 weeks of losing 1 lb a week, I went up to 238 this week, even though I've done nothing different.

But at least two people told me this week that I looked like I lost weight in my face (people who see me weekly).

Just keep on keeping track of what you eat. If you're not sure, then try taking a suspicious food out and see if it makes any difference. Pay attention to known stallers as well as what are trigger foods for you.

I'm proud of myself...LOL....and I hope that it helped the owner of this thread (but umm I dont agree with you folks and the scale...I weigh myself every single morning....more than once...I step on, step off, step on, step off...like three times in a row....LMAO).

Thank you guys for the great advice, I guess I just freak out too much when it comes to the scale. I am actually going to be measured tonight at the gym so hopefully I've lost some more inches..

                    Re: Gained

If you really cant keep off the scale why not make a project of the results?

Start a journal or diary and weigh yourself several times a day throughout the day.

Each time you step on it make a note of the time and weight as well as detailed info about what you have eaten, when you exercised and your bathroom visits.

After a few weeks you will be able to see how your body works and get a feel of your normal weight fluctuations, which might let you stop attaching such emotional importance to the readings.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

                      Re: Gained

I think I might do that, maybe I won't freak out everyday! Today was another bad day, I went from 237 to 238 and I have no clue what I'm doing wrong. I've never cheated once and I'm at the gym all the time. I guess I get frustrated because I'm working so hard at this and I'm not seeing the results I want. I'll keep on going though because I have to even if I'm frustrated. I got measured a couple days ago and it seems I've gone up an inch in my thighs and other places. I don't know what the deal is, I know it's around that TOM for me but I've never really had water weight when it's that time.

                        Re: Gained

If you TOM is approaching, then continue with your current regimen and wait until after it's over to do any measuring or weighing.

I never thought I retained water with my TOM, but I do. I can retain as much as 3-6 pounds of water weight.

Like I said, stop torturing yourself with these one pound gains/losses. You might not lose every day, every hour, every minute. What you are looking for is an overall decline in weight/measurements. Also, when you exercise you build muscle, so you might not see a change in the scale because a pound of fat weighs as much as a pound of muscle. So you might want to get your body fat analyzed. Afterall, we are losing weight in order to lose fat, muscle gain is a side-effect of the exercise you are doing. So it's better to be 200 pounds worth of muscle than it is to be 200 pounds worth of fat.

                          Re: Gained

One other consideeration for you: Are your scales accurate? Sometimes they lose the setting on zero, and gradually creep so when nothing is on the scale, the line is registering a few pounds. Scales' measurements can also be affected by whether the surface is level, whether what's on them is distributed evenly on the surface, temperature and humidity.
Don't take them too seriously, over the short term.
