  • My 8 weeks on Atkins - OWL 1

Hi all - Week 8. I can't believe it. I'm learning how to eat!

(WHAT?! am I stupid or something - obviously I knew how to eat before which is what got me in this position... right?) Oh boy - was I wrong!

I know EVERYTHING about dieting.... from a text book perspective. I've done Jenny Craig, Nutra System, Weight Watchers, different kinds of meetings, gyms, online programs, diet pills, cabbage diet, Sugar Busters, Ediets, Body for Life, Protein Power, low fat, low calorie, etc. (hey we could start a game naming all the diets we've ever been on - that should take til the next CENTURY )

What I DIDN'T KNOW was how to eat. Either I starved or I over ate. Listening to my body - ha ha ha ha... Part of my problem was a thyroid disorder (a small part, in my opinion, which I now take meds for). How did I get that? I mistreated my body for years and years and years. (I'm not a binger, in fact at this point, I eat way less than 2,000 calories a day and have for years. But I ate the wrong things, the wrong combination of things, and my body has been paying me back - in SPADES!)

Now, I'm learning. Thank you ADBB!
    • I'm learning what it feels like to be satisfied all day long - and not be hungry (or OVERLY full).
    • I'm learning that I CAN have my favorite foods - in moderation and with some adaptations. But I can still have them.
    • I'm learning that I DON'T have so many 'favorite' foods anymore. (Food is a fuel instead of a babysitter, pacifier, comforter, a payback (a whole discussion in that one alone - using to food as an "I'll SHOW YOU!"), etc.)
    • I'm learning that I CAN eat my 25 carbs worth of veggies in a day. (EVERYONE APPLAUD and say FINALLY! )
    • I'm learning to listen to my body. (For example, a few times I've had 2 cups of coffee in the morning. 12 HOURS later I'm craving sweets. That has only happened when I have 2 cups of coffee. I would NEVER have been able to figure out where a craving was coming from before - or why, or how to stop it, or ...)
I'm slightly depressed that I haven't lost any weight this week and I've GAINED inches. But only slightly. This is another week, in the rest of my life, and I know that I've eaten right (averaged 25 carb grams per day, percentages '65/26/8' & calories 1511), exercised ALOT (2227 calories burned this week), and not cheated - so I'll get there. Maybe slowly - but I'll get there.

Sorry for the long post... I think about this all week and hope for a GREAT WEIGH IN and measurement - but know that week by week, no matter what, as long as I keep reporting in, doing what I'm suppose to, listening to those who've walked this walk, I WILL MAKE IT!!!

Congrats!! Such discoveries we make about ourselves while changing our way of eating for life. Gotta love it! My inches go up and down just like the scale, which means a loss is not far off

Great post, Kacey. Your discoveries indicate you have changed your life, not just your diet. I'm not very far into this, but I've quickly learned that the attitude changes are just as important as the dietary ones. Thanks for sharing your insights.

I'm working on gaining the body self awareness you've aquired. It's a process, I guess. For example, I learned today that I can't stop eating low-carb chili... which isn't low carb anymore after 2 bowls of it!

I'm also starting the dairy rung this week. Enjoyed my carb countdown milk this morning, and am looking forward to yogurt and cottage cheese!

I think learning how to eat for your body is the best thing to help you lose and maintain weight.
