  • OWL Berries - Cranberry

I've just been doing some research on Cranberries and found out that they are good for:

    UTI
    Reduction of Dental Plaque
    Anti-Cancer Activity
    Heart Disease
    Kidney Stones
    Parasite Removal
    Antixoidant
    Ulcer
    Anti-Aging

I don't think I could eat the cranberries whole because they are so tart so I bought some pure (no added ingredients) cranberry juice (very hard to find among the lot of cocktails) and took four ounces and added it to four cups of water to dilute it. It is somewhat hard to drink, but I thought I might try to do this once a week (or once a month) just for health benefits.

An article in "Women First" magazine caught my interest and started the ball rolling.

    Anyone else "into" cranberries?

I only eat them with my turkey dinners..Xmas, easter, thanksgiving etc. I boil them down and sweetent with splenda.

Before low carbing I used to drink it when I got UTI's. You can get it in pill form as well, that's what i did in the spring when i had a uti (i'm prone to them).

How many carbs does the juice have?

How did you drink it? Did you dilute it or drink it full strength?

It has 12 grams of carbs for eight ounces so I got six grams with my four ounces and diluted it with four cups of water and sipped on it slowly for several hours.

It is not something that I would ever yearn for, that is sure. It is like taking medicine.

I used to drink a prediluted one, it wasn't the ocean spray kind, it wa ssome organic one, and was sweetened. It definately does for for UTI's though. Why not try to make a kind of compote or Jam with whole that you could have with yogurt, ricotta etc? I always think the whole fruit is better for you than just the juice because it has the fibres as well.

Do you think it would be bearable in homemade yogurt and one teaspoon of Splenda? The juice is diluted and is still so tart. If so, I'll look for some fresh/frozen berries and give it a whirl.

          Thanks for your advice!!!

cook your canberries and use them as a sauce with your meats like chciekn or pork. I love the berries dried like rasins and have done that with them. you can also make craberry jello using gelatin packets and your sweetner of choice. I like them on my falx cakes too mixed with syrup.

Dr Atkins warns us no to drink juice but to eat fruit. I've seen the concnetrate in our gourmet food store along with a cherry and blueberry one but have reisited.

I tried using ther cranberries with some cream in a jello concotopn but it curddled so try a small amount of your concnetrate in a small amount of your yogurt to see if ti curddles it.

Hmmmm 2Big I never thought of it curdling!

I would boile them down and sweeten them with splenda before i add them to the yogurt. I actually do this with rhubarb as well.

Here is Ocean Spray's recipes...instead of using their canned sauces, you can make your own with fresh berries and use that in the recipe. There's a couple of recipes on here that could be easily low carbed i think?

Juicy. Tart. Radically refreshing. We dream in full-on flavor.

                Thanks 2Big for the tips!

I wonder why the cranberries would curddle cream? That seems odd. I think I'll try cooking it like you suggested. It sounds like it would be an interesting addition to meat. Does the tartness calm down or do you have to add Splenda?

Thanks, Sadie, for the info! (I was posting here and saw your thread after I finished).

I'm going to print the tips that you and 2Big have provided. I really appreciate all the info!

The acid in the cranberries curdles the cream.

                      Re: OWL Berries - Cranberry

I used to love cranberry juice, but I can't drink it yet! They do sell low sugar/low calorie stuff that's quite good, but I don't know if it's worth it--I'd rather eat my fruit carbs than drink them. I have not done anything with fresh cranberries, but perhaps I will for Christmas (I will not be on the berries rung by Turkey Day).

Cranberry supplements can be a godsend--it's a pill, but I don't consider it like medicine. I used to be really prone to UTIs and those supplements really helped. You can also take them as a preventative measure. I take a few if I feel "twinges", etc. I actually found them more effective than drinking cranberry juice, because you can use a more concentrated dosage, and keep drinking water to flush out the infection. Vitamin C mixed with cranberry is even better.
