  • DREAMS FIELDS PASTA 5g CARBS

    Hello,

I was shopping and found that Dream Fields Pasta advertises their pasta for carb concious people. The box state 42g carbs and subtracts 37g of protective carbs? They then conclude that each serving (1 cup) has 5g of digestible carbs. Does this sound right? Has anybody experienced this type of labeling?

    It's hit and miss.

They are adding something to the pasta, a coating, that makes you absorb the carbs way more slowly then normal, keeping you from having a blood spike like you would have if you ate real pasta. It seems to work, at least for some people. Folks have tested their blood sugar and there was no spike. Some folks did see a spike many hours later though...suggesting those carbs very much DO count for some people.

Also you have to follow the cooking directions exactly, if you over cook it, the coating breaks down and it's like you are eating regular pasta.

Its a "your mileage may vary" thing, and I wouldn't try it until pre-maintenance or maintenance. I will experement with it eventually, but I am real wary of it. I don't need pasta to mess me up.

My sister told me that people that test their blood sugar levels before and after eating it found them changed only minimally, while this doesn't happen with regular pastas. She likes it..I have used it in the past and I like it...but they warn on the box that it shouldn't be cooked for longer than 8 minutes, then all of those "protective coating" carbs dissipate and you are left with regular pata-roni, and regular carb numbers.

Hey, thanks a bunch. I have no intention of eating it yet. I thought it was very interesting for later. If it works for me then pasta dinner could mean a total of 10 or 15g of carbs for the pasta compared to what would normally be about 130g of carbs.

I also remember reading somewhere (maybe Dana Carpender's holdthetoast.com site) that eating the pasta cold can mess up blood sugar readings too.

And don't ask Heidi about this pasta....she...ummm uhhh...erm...had 'explosive' digestive issues with the pasta. Most likely from one of the fibers used to slow the digestion of the pasta.

I use it occasionally. I don't trust it enough to use it regularly... maybe twice a month, and a small serving. I also undercook it (8 mins approx). Living in Italy it really helps to have a good pasta substitute now and again. I like it but don't crave it.

Have to say, I avoided it like the plague until I was well into maintenance.

It's nice to hear that others have used it and I would agree, only on occassion. The card count of 5g just really jumped out at me. But i will also say that I am a little confused about our own (Atkins) snack bars. They say 17g carbs and 8g fiber which should be 9g net carbs. The front of the package says "Atkins net carb count 2g" I dont get it? it also says it is ok for the induction phase 1 on the program. I finally ate one last night for my snack/desert. It was pretty good but I have been wondering about the actual count ever since.

I eat it about once a week (in maintenance) with no problem. Its a godsend for my pasta loving family.

You will see varied opinions on whether to count all the sugar alcohl carbs which Atkins company claims you can deduct. Personally I believe that if they affect you with the 'bathroom effect' you can deduct some of them as they are passing through you, but if you have no after-effects then you should count each pesky carb!

But you do need to check the actual ingredients to make sure ALL of them are allowed for your phase of OWL. So if it contains wheat flour it should be left till you reach the grain rung.

As far as I know NONE of the bars are legal for induction based on the ingredients!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

sally-are low carb pastas available in Italy or do you order from the UK, States, etc. We have zero low carb products available here I think. All Belgians seem to stay skinny on a diet of bread and potatoes.

Re: DREAMS FIELDS PASTA 5g CARBS

Maggie... I've never found a low carb pasta here in Italy, more's the pity. They don't have much low carb anything here (specialty products, I mean). I have mine sent from the UK. If I try to get foodstuffs from the USA I have customs problems. The Italian customs are notoriously awkward but maybe Belgium is a different matter.

I order Dreamfields from the Lowcarb Megastore: http://www.lowcarbmegastore.com/ and have the stuff sent by courier. It costs a fortune, so I usually have one big pack of stuff sent a couple of times a year. They also stock shiritaki noodles.

Re: DREAMS FIELDS PASTA 5g CARBS

We do not have low carb "speciaity" foods either in Belgium. Oh wait, some bakkerys lately have a low carb bread but of course no nutritional info. I never bought it. I think it is a good thing that these products aren't easily available to me. If we had those Atkins bars in Belgium they would be too temping! I think I will make an order from the website in the future. Just to try out the pasta. I guess you have to be on the train rung for that? I need to figure out what rung for the shiritaki noodles. Seeds and nuts or the legumes. I am guessing the legumes rung. I can answer basically any question about induction after doing it several times. However with OWL I am constantly trying to figure things out.

Not sure about the shiritaki... I believe it's made from a root... I only tried it when already in maintenance.

I gave Dreamfields another chance ont he weekend. First time I tried it a few months ago I had cravings, but had it with a tomato sauce, the sauce may have been why. I came across the elbow pasta last week, so I made some macaroni and cheese (my favourite food that I miss terribly) and it was wonderful! No cravings, no stomach grumblings etc. I think maybe the fat in the cheese and sauce might have helped this time. Though, i had portion control issues, i'm sure i easy at 3 portions

I'm leary of the carb count in it though..so I'm only going to make it an occaisional treat. They've also stopped carrying it here at the grocery stores, which figures now that I like it LOL, so that should make it easy not to overdo it
