I know that you add 5 carbs at each rung but if i skip a rung then i don't at those carbs, right? So going from Rung one to Rung three i add only 5 carbs, correct? Is it important to add in those foods everyday? I don't eat a whole lot of nuts or seeds. This is tough! LOL

You add 5 net carbs with each rung. So if you go from 1-3, you add 5 net carbs.Originally posted by Tracie515I know that you add 5 carbs at each rung but if i skip a rung then i don't at those carbs, right? If a food is 'new' to you---that is you haven't eaten it during your Atkins---you add it every other day for a week. See what it does to your weight loss. If it does nothing bad, then you can try it every day. See what it does to you. If it does nothing bad, then you can have it daily if you want. If it messes you up, you might want to experiment to see how many times a week you can eat it, if you want.
The foods you should be eating daily are the 3 cups of Induction-type veggies, proteins and fats. The OWL foods are all optional additions to your diet to add variety. It's kind of like getting dressed for an evening out: you have a basic black dress (your Induction menu) that you can spruce up with a high heels (Rung 1 veggie), a necklace (Rung 2 food), a cute handbag (Rung 3 food), upswept hairdo (Rung 4), etc.

Re: Skipping Dairy Rung
What I found so interesting about the nut rung is i always hated any nut (actually..had never tasted 98% of them!), other than chocolate covered almonds and peanut butter..i didn't even like peanut m&m's! Now nuts are one of my favourite foods, so much so that they're an issue food for me because I can't control my portions! I have to measure my portions.
I gave every rung a chance even if I didn't think I really liked any foods on it (i'd say alcohol could be an exception if you don't drink). I was never a big dairy person, now yogurt is one of my favourite foods, as is ricotta cheese, . Didn't really like legumes, but added them to test them out..still not one of my favs so i rarely eat them, but I do now know they don't cause me issues. You'd be surprised how your tastes change. I do think it's a good idea to try adding every rung that you can, unless you have food allergies etc (again alchol can be an exception). Since this is a lifetime woe, you may not want to have dairy or nuts now..but I think it's a good idea to test how you handle those foods should you want to have them in the future. You don't have to have them constantly, but at least test them out...that's my opinion on OWL anyway.Jen, 39, F

Re: Skipping Dairy Rung
I agree with Jen (Sadie147) about trying each rung. I was going to skip the dairy rung as I hate the taste of milk but was reminded that yogurt is dairy!! So I could have greek yogurt on my chicken curries again!!
Yummy greek yogurt with a serving of bluebriies once you get to the berries rung is excellent too!Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Skipping Dairy Rung
I have never been a milk drinker, and probably never will be....but, the dairy rung introduced me to cottage cheese, yogurt, and ricotta cheese. I love all three of them now. Pre-Atkins I wouldn't eat any of them. Just something to think about.
Oh, ice cream is on the dairy rung, though I have to stay away from that stuff.~Joy

Re: Skipping Dairy Rung
Most of them have sugar alcohols. Each person's mileage varies with regards to the sugar alcohols. They don't necessarily throw me out of ketosis, but I want to go off the deep end and eat more and more and more.
There are recipes though to make your own ice cream...Oh and I do like the occasional glass of Hood's Calorie (Carb) Countdown milk with some DaVinci Chocolate syrup made with only splenda. Yummy.~Joy

Re: Skipping Dairy Rung
Those sugar alcohols can be NASSSSSSSSSSTY, but it varies for each person. I tried some of that ice cream and was SO bloated and huge and gassy the next day (I was MISERABLE) that I am never eating that $#!t again. I would try making your own ice cream before you buy any of that stuff with lots of sugar alcohols.
Try out the dairy rung because, like the others said, you'll probably find foods you love that you never wanted to eat before. Pre-atkins, I thought cottage cheese looked disgusting, couldn't figure out why anyone would eat it. Now I LOVE eating it with berries, and it's become a GREAT replacement for my standard breakfast omelet. Going through the rungs has given me courage or derring-do or whatnot to try lots of crazy new foods.START 8/16/06 @ 270+~MG1: 220-12/2/06~MG2: 210-1/07~MG3: 199-3/2/07~MG4: 190-4/27/07~MG5: 180-7/04/07~GOAL: 170

I make my own ice cream....it limits the servings I can have because I have to make it so it really is an once in a while type food.

Re: Skipping Dairy Rung
I use this Girl Scout-like recipe I found all the time for ice cream. I have done it with half and half instead of cream (I find out on OWL that half and half works well for me) and I like it both ways. This recipe is easy, cheap, and uses stuff I have around all the time anyway. You can play with extracts or fresh berries (on the appropriate step of course) to change up the flavor.
The most fabulous part is that this recipe is around 5 carbs, give or take, so it's a neat little OWL step.
I don't remember where I got the acual recipe from because I'm a ditz when it comes to remembering junk like that, but it was on the web somewhere (possibly the old recipe book here), and it's excellent.
Ingredients
1 tablespoon artificial sweetener
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
1/2 cup Heavy Cream
6 tablespoons Table Salt
3 cups Ice
1 Sandwich Sized Ziploc Bag
1 Gallon Sized Ziploc Bag
In the sandwich sized ziploc, combine the sugar substitute, vanilla
extract and heavy cream. Seal the bag and shake lightly to mix ingredients.
In the gallon sized ziploc bag, add 3 cups of ice (or fill half the bag
with ice)and add 6 tablespoons of table salt.
Place the sealed sandwich sized bag into the gallon bag and seal the
gallon bag. Shake the entire contents for at least 4 minutes (shake longerfor harder ice cream).
Once desired hardness has been achieved, remove smaller baggies andrinse throughly with cold water (if you miss this step, you may wind up with salty ice cream!)
Recipe makes about a 1/2 cup of ice cream.

Re: Skipping Dairy Rung
You're very welcome. I made some tonight for my husband. It's soooo much better than buying those cartons with the sugar alcohols in them because 1) It tastes better in my opinion and is light and fresh-feeling and 2) If you measure out and make a reasonable portion and just eat that, it's easier to stop because you have to shake another bag if you decide to have seconds, i.e. it cuts down on the "impulsive factor".No stats.
