  • Yogurt Question

At my grocery store I couldn't find any low-carb yogurt. What I did find was a "lower" carb while comparing labels but since I have not had yogurt yet I would like to make sure this is O.K.

    Dannon All Natural Nonfat Yogurt
    Plain - No artificial anything

    Serving 1 cup

    Total Carb 16 g
    D. Fiber 0
    Sugars 15 g (???)

Ingredients: Cultured Grade A Non Fat Milk, Pectin (I guess Pectin must be a type of sugar?)

I was hoping to have some of this with some blackberries - I'm moving up today.

    Thanks for the help.
    Stella

    Re: Yogurt Question

    Hello,

I use a brand called Dannon - Light & Fit Carb Control. It only has 3 grams of carbs. It was a little odd getting used to the flavor, (it only comes in Vanilla Bean and Strawberry Creme) but it is wonderful mixed with a few berries or ice/berries/yougurt in the blender (in the summer) for a smoothie. It's not a very big portion, but does the job. A lot of folks around here use some Greek yogurt, but I've not been able to find it anywhere in the Midwest.

Pectin, is a gelling agent, used in lots of jellies and jams, as I remember it does have a sweet taste to it, my mother used it alot in canning fruit and such. Maybe it's kind of like a preserving agent too.

Walmart / Kroger / carry the Dannon - Light & Fit Carb Control yogurt here.

    Good Luck!
    Scooter

      Re: Yogurt Question

If you can find the Greek yogurt, go with that. Look for it at health food type grocery stores like Whole Foods,Trader Joes, Fresh Market, Wild Oats etc.

Else, look for a version of yogurt that is plain, unsweetened and preferably NOT a lowfat. Although, that's kind of tough to find.

As for the sugars, lactose (from the milk) is a sugar which is why dairy is a rung. So the sugars listed are not added sugar, but the lactose which is fine.

        Re: Yogurt Question

Yeah it's a thickener and semi-interestingly "Pectin is a natural carbohydrate that is extracted from the inner peel of many fruits; it is most commonly extracted from lemons, as well as limes, oranges and grapefruits. The peels are washed, ground and processed to extract the pectin. The pectin is then refined, vacuum-dried and ground."

We found the Dannon light & Fit carb control stuff in our local grocery store, in addition to the flavors Scooter mentioned we also found a raspberry and cream version. It seems like it's getting pretty common, I'd suggest you try a couple other grocery stores if you can.

          Re: Yogurt Question

They don't sell low carb yogurt here and I'm glad, I tried it when in the states and didn't like it one bit, i find it watery . I also wonder if it has the same nutritional benefits of regular yogurt?

You might want to look for a yogurt without pectin, though the carb count in that one sounds in line with any plain ones i have seen, it's usually 6g - 8 per 1/2 cup depending onthe mf %.

One thing to look for in yogurt as well are bacterial cultures. Yogurts with lactobactillius and bifidus (sorry if they're spelled wrong), are very good for you.

I love yogurt, it's such a healthy food!

            Re: Yogurt Question

Stella, I stopped buying that carb control stuff because I didn't like the splenda aftertaste, and overall it just seemed too sweet.

I buy Dannon plain wholefat yogurt, NOT the nonfat. You want to avoid words like "nonfat" or "lowfat" because that means added sugars. Look for something that has full fat or is made with a higher percentage of milk fat. The massive tub claims that 1 cup is a serving (12g), but I'd like to meet the person who could eat a full cup of that stuff! I eat 1/2c. servings which come out to 6g carbs.

I too am unable to purchase greek yogurt here. So I end up buying the Dannon stuff. The only drawback is that I don't eat it soon/often enough, and the tub goes bad before I can finish it.

              Re: Yogurt Question

I occasionally buy the Stonyfield Organic whole milk yogurt. For 1/2 cup it's about 5-6 net carbs. Granted 1/2 cup might not seem like a large serving, but the Dannon Light and Fit yogurts in the individual servings contain about that amount.

                Re: Yogurt Question

The Dannon light and fit also comes in blueberry cream and there is also peaches and cream. Those two are the flavors I normally buy.

Actually here the lower fat/non fat yogurts don't have added sugars just less fats..i've found the carb counts about the same. the only difference other than that is calories. Do they add sugars to them there?

                    Re: Yogurt Question

Yeah, the stuff I've found here, if it has NONFAT or LOWFAT on the carton, there are more carbs in it. And I've checked all the brands available in the 3 grocery stores here. The added carbs are from the type of milk used to make the yogurt...I shouldn't have said added sugars, although that nonfat/lowfat added sugar rule holds true for other foods.
