  • Sudden Sugar Effects?

I hate to repeat myself but "I am the mum who is walking her daughter down the aisle in 2 weeks"! I have been on Induction for 31 days. I am starting on the first rung tomorrow.

My daughter has described her wedding cake to me and it certainly sounds appetising! She said there will be plenty of food at the reception for Atkins-followers e.g. mixed grills... seafood platters etc.

But I was wondering if some of the wedding cake would give me any bad reaction like a headache? I know it may stall my weight loss, but I think I really would like a slice - and maybe something else there that looks extra-delicious, but this would be a one-off thing. I'm just very curious if I may get shaky or headaches, or other bad side-effects of carbs & sugar after all this time without them (except for a little veg).

Thanks to all (after midnight in Australia and I am off to bed... I will call back in the morning - have a good day!)

You'll probably find that the cake is entirely too sweet for you, if you've been without simple sugars all this time. I had a bite of my son's birthday cake, and it was all that I could tolerate. It was simply....too...sweet (ugh!)

Realize that you're an adult, and can make your own decision about it. The book says that sometimes, just decide you're going to break the diet - and do it - have the slice of cake, the glass of wine, whatever. Then go back to square one. It'll take a bit to get back into ketosis. (the more you leave ketosis, the harder it is to get back in! at least for me, anyway)

      Good luck!

Some people find they do have a horrid reaction when re-introducing carbs in a sudden big way... others don't. It's impossible to say if you'll have problems... unless you try something high carb before the wedding.
Needless to say, if you can avoid both the pre-trial and the wedding carb binge, that would be for the best.

My advice would be to SKIP THE CAKE.

Unless you're of some ancient line of superhuman demigods with the ability to control the amount of insulin dumped into their systems, you'll probably have some nasty effects from eating the cake. Possible side effects include: rash, hives, nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, and dizziness to name a few. Not to mention bloating and weight gain. I'm not trying to scare you, I'm trying to be honest. If you're going to eat it, you should know what could happen to you.

I've been to parties, celebrations, etc. and skipped the cake, skipped the drinks, skipped the sweets. Why? I don't want to undo what I've done, and it's not like there will NEVER BE ANOTHER wedding cake/mixed drink/piece of chocolate in the world ever again. That stuff is NOT going away. The moment itself, however, will not be here forever. I'd rather enjoy the MOMENT rather than the food. Enjoying the food is what got me here in the first place.

Focus on the happy day. Focus on the joy your daughter is finding. Focus on welcoming new members into the family.

I want you to be successful and I think it's important that you think of Atkins as a WAY OF LIFE, and not a quick fix.

Or have the slice of cake frozen. Then when you reach your goal weight, you might decide whether to defrost and have a bite or chuck it in the trash.

                Re: Sudden Sugar Effects?

i'm going to buck the trend here and state that if you really want the cake, take a piece. maybe you will only want a single bite, or even just half. or maybe you'll eat the whole thing. you will not undo everything you've worked for IF that is your only cheat. and the psychological aspect will be satisfied - you will not be obsessing that you missed your daughter's wedding cake or that you've been deprived. let's face it - none of us got fat from eating cake once or twice a year at a wedding - it's because we incorporated cake and sweets into our everyday diets.

it's doubtful to me that you would have a vomit/diarrhea episode from 1 piece, but if you know that the cake is a gateway to more bad stuff then avoid it by all means. on president's day weekend, i went off plan, and it included a slice of cake. by tuesday, i was back in ketosis, and saw the scale move down later that week. remember that this is a way of life and a state of mind. good luck and have a great time at the wedding!

Thanku lulubell... yes it would be nice to have a piece of my daughter's wedding cake. I would probably have nothing more there than what I am allowed (I'm on the first rung of OWL). I think the side-effects would be fairly minimal - well, I hope so.

                    Re: Sudden Sugar Effects?

I think if you eat a good meal of protein and fat before hand (which i assume you will at the dinner) then you will be ok i'm sure. I would make it a small piece, and skip the other desserts. If there is fruit etc..if you REALLY feel you need something for dessert, maybe have that instead (not really illegal foods on atkins, just not legal on induction).

Thanks Sadie.... yes, I will definitely be eating from the Mixed Grill platter, the Seafood platter, and there's another one of cold meats I could have.......... followed by a little of the wedding cake

I agree, you probably already know whether or not you are going to have a little piece of cake. Just remember that if you do not feel any side effects after a small piece - DO NOT go all out on a binge and eat more. the first time I tried Atkins I also had a little bite, felt fine and later that same night became obsessed and wanted more - SO THAT IS WHY I HAD TO START Atkins all over again. I am a big believer in "not even 1 bite" - not that I never do, but I have learned now that I need to be in the right frame of mind before taking a little bite.
