    Re: coffee discussions

That's interesting! Lulu, I was reading an article the other day about addiction transfer--there is a growing trend of gastric bypass patients trading their food addiction (since they can't binge anymore) for drugs, alcohol, shopping, sex, etc. It's becoming a serious problem!

So though we're obviously not gastric bypass patients, most of us did have an addiction to food, or certain types of food. I know I've transferred my addiction!

I have traded my food addiction for exercise, but I make sure I don't overdo it. I've always known that I have an "addiction" personality. Once I try something I want it constantly until it makes me sick or I get sick of it. But I really am trying to address these issues and make sure I don't overdo anything.

absolutely! regrettably, i know a GB patient who traded the food addiction for addiction to a reckless lifestyle: lots of one-night-stands and designer clothes she could not afford. she is married now, and so the one-night-stands have stopped and so has the extravagant shopping, but she is gaining the weight back in a bad way.

vicious, i tell you. it is so important to get a grip on this kind of behavior. thankfully, you have chosen a good outlet, as long as you don't hurt yourself by doing too much too often.

Yeah, it's one of those "too much of a good thing" addictions! But I strive for healthy exercise, not fanatical exercise.

          Re: coffee discussions

Thanks for all of the info! Joy, I have a question - was your coffee caffeinated or not? I've given up caffeine (I know that decaf still has trace amounts, though), but I enjoy the taste of coffee - particularly as a 'sweet treat' with a couple of drops of liquid spenda when the kids are eatting desserts or coworkers are eatting cake from the monthly birthday celebrations. However, if I knew that there was a connection between decaf and my weight, I'd quit that too.

I've drank decaf from the beginning, and I'm at the end of my 5th week of Atkins. I lost 9 pounds in induction, 3 more the next week, gained 3.5 the next week (maybe because of TOM, don't know), lost that back the next week and have bounced back and forth between my lowest weight and 2 pounds up ever since. I've decided to go back to exactly what I was doing in the beginning (only change will be no half-and-half which I've used at work because that's all they have but will bring my cream now) and no peanut butter.

Sorry that's so long, just trying to figure out the probability of decaf being a problem.

          Pam

            Re: coffee discussions

For me, it does not matter whether its decaf or not. I've added both in numerous times and have the same results.

                    Re: coffee discussions

I think I'm one of those that have to cut the coffee. I quit and lost quicker, added it back a little and quit losing. I'm back off and drinking decaf or herbal tea instead. Think I'm losing again, but I'm not weighing until next week. Next challenge is tomorrow. Going to a friends house who weighs about 98 lbs soaking wet and can eat anything & everything she wants in as large of quanities as she wants. I'm making a homemade ranch dip and veggie tray for me. I may roast a turkey breast too since she is baking a Honey Baked Ham

Funny someone should mention shopping, I skipped lunch yesterday and went shooping @ Macys and have a pedicure and a full set done!! I ate a portion of my lunch when I was done and then a hamburger when I got home later. So I really didn't skip a meal just didn't eat as much

Well, I had to have my coffee this morning. It is down in the 30's here in Dallas, so I needed something to warm me up. I cannot believe it. There are even snow flurries! What is up with this? Normally we are heating the pool on Easter weekend and getting in it for the first time.

Don we had snow too, not much, but we had to kick the pellet stove back on. I got sick of huddling under the covers or wearing a jacket inside. In fact I was just getting ready to have a cup of tea and a flax cookie. I'm glad coffee doesn't stall you, but come on you're a guy you men have an easier time with weight lose then us weaker sex members.

                          Re: coffee discussions

I haven't noticed that I get stalled on coffee, but I have been in a slight stall though. After losing about 3 lbs per week, I finally went off of extended induction and onto OWL starting last week. In the past 12 days, I have only managed 1.6 lbs. I know it is temporary, but still!

Great discussion. Thanks, OP for bringing this up.

I have been 1 cup a day since beginning Atkins. I'll cut it out and see if I lose quicker.

Julie: I too am an addictive personality person. I'm starting to trade my food addiction for other things, like exercise and whatnot. It's hard though.

                            Joy: Great information.

Hrmmmm, this is a bit of an eye opener! But Dr. A does say that caffeine is an appetite stimulant, so maybe it is not just the coffee causing the stalls? I dunno, I drink maybe 2 cups of coffee a week, and decaf at that. So for me I don't think it is too big of an issue. I can live without it, but tea is a big thing for me. I like to have a cup of decaf tea in the mornings. I do count 1 carb for 6 oz of tea and the counts for any thing else I add to it, but I wonder if drinking tea would have the same affect on stalling? Hmmm, food for thought.

after almost 5 months on Atkins and over 63 lbs down! Watch for updates!

I only do decaf as well. On the rare occasion that I have a diet soda (maybe 1 per week), I also drink caffeine free. BTW, I have found Diet Rite Zero. No caffeine, no sugar, no sodium, and no calories, made with Splenda.
