  • Pork Rinds and Peanuts???

Where I reside, I only have a couple of choices when it comes to pork rinds and although they say they have 0 carbs, sugar is an ingredient. So should I stay away from this? I am on 1st week of OWL.
Also, when looking at the values of peanuts (in a jar) they were listed as 5 carbs, 2 fibre and 1 sugar (for about a handful). Why can't these be used as a snack? Sugar? They seem to be actually better than pork rinds, comparatively speaking. In fact the peanuts were LOWER in sodium!
I know that when on "nuts" wrung you can have peanuts in the shell. But these are listed as 3 net carbs??

The reason nuts aren't allowed until later on is that they are VERY hard to portion control. Many people (myself included) find that peanuts in particular cause MAJOR MAJOR cravings. So, no they aren't allowed.

Keep looking for pork rinds with no sugar added. I can't believe a company would actually do that. I get so irked these days because there is sooooo much stuff out there with added sugar that is totally not necessary. The sugar (as we all know) is addictive...that's probably why they add it. Yuck.

Peanuts and all nuts are allowed on the Nut/Seed rung. So when you get there, you can use them for snacks if you choose.

But as Valid Rogue said, portion control is an issue for many people. Nuts/seeds don't follow the 5 net carb addition that the other OWL foods follow: we are limited to 1 ounce (except for cashews, which are limited to 1/2 ounce.) This is in part due to the caloric values of nuts. For example, 1 ounce of nuts have about 100 calories. Some nuts are very low in carb, so 5 ounces will be 5 net carbs. Therefore it's possible to eat 500 calories worth of nuts and if you don't have your portions under control, it's possible to eat 1000 calories worth of nuts, which will completely derail your weight loss endeavors, because caloric intake does matter.

When I entered OWL, I used the Rung 1 vegetables as my 'snack' food. For example, 5 net carbs of veggie sticks or veggie chips/crisps (celeriac or pumpkin) with a dip is much lower in sodium, lower in carbs, higher in fiber, higher in vitamins and minerals than 1 ounce of nuts or pork rinds.

What I don't understand is that Pork Rinds, although 0 carbs (net 2 for peanuts) have the same calories as dry roasted peanuts (1 oz = 160 cals). Pork Rinds have 400 sodium compared to extremely low for peanuts; aslo doesn't portion control have the same liabilities as Pork Rinds? I could easily eat bags of the stuff in one sitting.
My point (not arguing) is that maybe it should be left up to the individual on whether or not they can control their portions of nuts. Some people don't care for Pork Rinds and if these are allowed on Induction, then why not peanuts?

          Hey, Buddy...

The number of calories and sodium in a food is not what determines whether a food is allowed during induction or not; there is science involved in the rungs beyond calories.

As for peanuts... yeah, that is a personal choice as to whether you can limit yourself to an ounce. This has got to be one of the most problematic foods out there for most people, though. I, myself, am a NUT when it comes to nuts -especially peanuts! What I mean by that is I will be to the nut rung very soon, and I know that I will be able to have *zero* peanuts because I have absolutely NO control with them. In fact, from experience I know that the only nut I will be able to tolerate is unsalted, natural almonds. With those, I will have to count them out and be strong. They are sooo good for you, and I have control with them.

About the porks rinds... wow, I have never seen sugar added to pork rinds. Look around some more. I do keep them around the house to have 2 or 3 to tide me over at times, but I get sick of them quick... too much sodium - gross!

The nut rung comes around pretty quick in OWL... hang in there!

Because peanuts are legumes and legumes are not allowed during Induction, due to their carbohydrate amount. Peanuts and other nuts, however, are allowed during OWL phase.

True, individual tastes are at the base of Atkins. People can do a perfectly 'legal' Induction without touching a single pork rind or processed meat. As I said, I ate mostly ate veggies for 'crunch' during Induction, because I don't like eating highly salted foods.

That's why I tend to eat nuts as an ingredient in a dish rather than as a snack. I have a killer recipe for pecan stuffed mushrooms I got from Gourmet Magazine---totally Atkins friendly, didn't have to monkey the recipe at all!
