  • Beans beans which beans?

    Hello.

I just have a tiny question for those enjoying beans (legumes)/OWL rung 6....

What type of beans do you eat?

I'm a fan of humus, black beans, and kidney beans.Humus because it's just really good with celery, salads, etc. Black and kidney beans are my favorite for salads. I've even made 3-bean salad.

I'm wondering if there's any other type of bean/legume you might be enjoying on OWL.

I LOVE black beans! In fact, I ate them last night with cheese and sour cream in a goopy tasty mess--I don't care how gross it looked, it TASTED awesome! I also like hummus with bell pepper strips. I made baked beans with great northerns, pork, LC ketchup, and mustard, and a few other ingredients...they were AWESOME!

I haven't had kidney beans in ages, but I love them. Garbanzos, too! I think black beans are the best bang for your "buck", as in they have the least amount of carbs per serving....15g for 1/2 cup I believe?

I love all beans! Kidney beans are great. One I don't think you mentioned are chickpeas - really lovely.

I saw a reciepe agaes ago that was something like: drain a can of chickpeas, mix with 2 tbsps olive oil and flavouring (chilli powder great, use to taste) fling them on a baking tray (with wax paper) and cook in the oven. Not sure for how long but until crunchy - great snack food.

Julie...goopy mess sounds Delish! Thanks for the idea on stips of bell peppers for 'dipping'. I just opened a can of black beans "Caribean Style" by S & W; but I put my through a rinse in the drainer to remove some of the extra "stuff" in it. DH says I washed away the good stuff (flavoring), but I still think there's some good flavor. Oh, and the can says...18g carb and 7 grams of fiber. Talk about exciting! Only 11 net carbs for 1/2 cup. Woo hoo!

I think I like humus because I like garbanzo beans...LOL...

Baarb...oh, chickpeas. I've not had those in, oh, I don't know how long. I use to get those confused with garbanzos...LOL. Thanks for the tip! I'll have to be adventureous next grocery shopping day!

        I love beans

          Re: Beans beans which beans?

I like the "pink beans". The Goya brand canned pink beans (I know...I know....but canned is good too!) have about 5 net carbs per 1/4 cup of beans---the perfect amount for OWL Phase. I mash those beans with a little onion powder or garlic powder, fresh bround pepper. Then spread it on a fiber rye cracker (WASA brand 5 net carbs), and drizzle with a good extra virgin olive oil---very nice for breakfast. I also mix the mash with egg yolks, when I'm making deviled eggs.

Oh yeah, bean mash also makes a good "glue" for holding together things like meat balls or vegetable pancakes.

They are. They're called "Ceci" beans too!

Chickpeas and borlotti beans (these last great with tuna, red onion, oil and vinegar) are my favs. Nice to learn that garbanzo are the same as chickpeas!

I thought of this thread and had green bean/kidney bean salad last night. It was actually quite good! I haven't had kidney beans in such a long time...they were surprisingly sweet. I made sure to rinse them clean to get rid of that syrup that they're in.

                      Re: Beans beans which beans?

Ceci beans is the italian name for garbanzo's. That's what we always called them growing up, but a lot of people look at you funny when you say that, so I started calling them garbanzos.

Okay, so now I've learned something even more about beans. I thought "chickpeas" were the small yellow beans and garbanzo were the funny looking (larger) bean. Who'd thunk they were the same thing. To-m-a-to...to-mah-to...I guess. LOL..(oye!).

Oh, the pink beans! Those are good! Mashing them up for adding to meatballs is a great suggestion, also. I'll have to try that one next time I make a batch up.

I looked for pink beans last night and couldn't find them. I looked in with the beans/veggies, and in the ethnic foods, no luck! DARN IT!
