    Okay so....

How bad is it to actually skip rungs?

Ive been on rung one for uh.... a few weeks... i dont wanna hit the dairy rung cos well, nothing appeals to me lol... Im not much of a dairy person... i dont eat the amount of cheese were allowed anyway so i dont see the point in forcing myself to eat something that i wouldnt put in my future maintenance WOE anyway.

I dont eat nuts, dont like them... so i can skip this rung right?

Berries... I can do this... and its something i can see me wanting in the future in my diet...

Is it okay for me to jump rungs like this and head straight onto my berries? or is it going to cause me problems?

    Re: Skipping Rungs

    Emma,

You and I sound a lot alike about rungs 2 and 3. I think I read where as long as you stay in the previous rung the amount of time you would have stayed at the rung you want to skip, you can do that. So, for example, you stay at each rung for 2 weeks... you could stay at rung 1 for its original 2 week, plus 4 extra weeks for the 2 skipped rungs. You can add more veggies during this time.

I have been on rung 1 for about 7 weeks because I want to try every veggie under the sun before I move on, since I know I won't add much from rungs 2 and 3.
Maybe one of the experienced ones can help with this?

        Re: Skipping Rungs

I think that's fine as long as you spend the extra time on the preceding rung. Just make sure that there are no foods you want to add. Personally, I think you should try out the new foods just in case. I never tried cottage cheese until the dairy rung, and now it's one of my favorite foods. Just because you've never liked something before, doesn't mean you won't like it now! I'd try out the rungs, just to see if there's anything that appeals to you. Dairy is more than just cheese. You can have more heavy cream, ricotta cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, greek yogurt, more sour cream, mascarpone, or another serving of aged cheese. Nuts and seeds are plentiful, and even if you don't like eating nuts, flours and meals can be made with the nuts to be used in other foods.

THe choice is up to you, just make sure if you don't want to do rungs 2 and 3 that you spend the extra time on the veggie rung.

I hope this happens to me!! I want to like cottage cheese so bad. I've only tasted it once, many years ago, and it tasted so yucky that I have avoided it ever since. Who knows? I am eating lots of vegetables that I wouldn't have touched with a ten foot pole before now. I will try it.

I'm the same way. Before the dairy rung, I wouldn't touch yogurt or cottage cheese with that ten foot pole LOL

Now, I love cottage cheese and yogurt, particularly greek yogurt...mascarpone cheese, and even MILK!

And, as for nuts, they cause so many problems, that IMO it might not be a bad idea to skip them...HOWEVER you should at least give almond flour, and coconut flour a try as breading or instead of crackers/bread in casseroles.

Yay, there's hope! I will like cottage cheese, I will like cottage cheese...

So, I would add almond flour in the third rung? (I never experimented with flours on my first time around.)

I had intended to skip the dairy rung initially as I have never liked milk and was happy with the variety and amount of cheese on induction. Then I was reminded of yogurt and tried the greek yogurt!! Yummy and such a useful menu item for sweet and savoury uses.

I would not like to have to manage without using nut flours now either. Makes cooking experiments so versatile!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

mitzi, I just take raw unsalted almonds and put them in a coffee grinder and grind until it's a flour consistency. Then I mix with some of the canned parmesan cheese and use it as a breading for deep frying. I've also used it to make "cakes" and "breads" from recipes off this site. There's one for a chocolate cake that's divine! There's also a recipe in one of George Stellas cookbooks that is a pumpkin pound cake using almond flour.

Ummm, I also use it regularly to add some "body" to a squash casserole. I grind it a little more coarse for that recipe.

nuts make me projectile vomit - i think i have a slight allergy to them, so the flour will do the same - so ill stay away from that one!

How any of you can eat cottage cheese is beyond me! ew! i might, however give the milk ago, but im a milk freak, i can drink it by the gallon, i'll never be allowed to do that again will i?? that was my every day breakfast, 20oz of full fat milk, yum!

Emma, I'm not sure if they have any modified milk products over there, but I am a huge fan of this stuff called Calorie Countdown milk by Hood. I don't like regular milk, but I love chocolate milk! This stuff is great, only 4g net carbs for 8 ounces! Check out what options you have. And you know, if you want to spend the carbs, you CAN drink real milk. It's a healthy food.

Well, IMO, food is quite similar to medicine, perhaps just less potent, on the body. So what works for one person may not for another. Like Aspirin, many people can take it, but some people are allergic to it. So it is with nuts or cottage cheese (perhaps lactose intolerance? non of my Chinese students like dairy products).

Dr. Atkins wrote down the general principles of his diet, so we can apply it as it works for us. I think you try out new stuff and then eat what makes your body healthy and happy.

Oh, Joy, thank you so much for your response! I am pleased to report that almonds are just about the only nut that I both love and can tolerate without control issues or stalling, so I'm glad to hear about being able to make flour with them. This thread has inspired me to start moving up the other rungs, as this is my 7th week on rung 1 and I have found that I can eat a ton more vegetables and still lose weight. I really am a very inexperienced cook, so I will be leaning on people like you and Julie to get me on my feet.

I'm going to go and buy some cottage cheese, today. (fingers crossed that I will like it!)

Greek yogurt, huh? Tell me, does it just say Greek yogurt on the label? Is it usually found with the other yogurts, or in a different section of the store?

                            Thanks for your response, Elizellen!

Oh, I'm a rung jumper, too, because of the reasons of knowing what foods I can't tolerate after the whatever-number-of-times I've restarted Atkins.

I'm curious about the greek yogurt too! Hmm...maybe it's at the healthfood store.
